This is a little more complicated than it sounds. You need to consult the law firm that is handling your incorporation details to do what is called a "name search". You need to be sure that whatever cool name you do eventually come up with is not currently trademarked by someone else.
I am, of course, assumming that you are dealing with a reliable law firm to handle these details. Because you really, really should be. |

The name of your company doesn't have to be clever. If you want to make marketing easier, the name should provide insight into what you do. For example, what does "Smith Financial Serivces" really do? Should I be interested? Do they provide financial services to banks? Provide assistance for people with credit problems? Are they in the collections business? I cannot tell.
You don't need a cute name. Pick a word, combine it with a description: Summit Second Mortgage Lenders, Horizon Refinancing, Riverfront Discount Brokerage, Canyon Small Business Lending. Then, move on to the other key elements of running your business. |

Since any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party, I wanted to go a different route...
I suggest either hiring a name creation firm or get together with your friends and/or family and throw a "name party" & have everyone bounce some ideas around. Compile a listing of names that you like the best. Once you have that list, do as much free research as you can before you delve into comprehensive research.
I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there.
Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I'd try them out first.
Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending & registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files.
There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I'm not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You'll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for "free domain name search" and "national yellowpages" and the appropriate links will pop up.

Usually people within the Finance business tend to name the business after the founder. I recently finished working at an accident insurance company in Manchester called 'Antony Hodari & Co'.
The name of 'Antony Hodari' gives the business that 'importance' and 'professional' factor where as the '& co' allows people to believe that this is a big company with many people involved thus giving the impression of a close-working team or a 'family' if you like.
Whatever you choose, make sure it isn't that of a stupid Nickname!
For example - which company would you take more seriously?

2. Esure.com
Elephant sounds tacky and cheap. Esure sounds profesional in comparison.
