Most people who want to start an online business without knowing the basics will usually end up being eaten by online wolves in the guise of scammers and savvy marketers.
I would suggest you do some research about how people make money online first. Even running your own website about a topic that you love, then selling ad space on that website can qualify as an online business. In fact, starting your own blog is one of the easiest ways to start making money online. The most important thing about learning to make money online is to learn, learn, learn. And when you're done learning, learn some more.
So here's a breakdown of the basic online businesses :
- create your own website. write good quality content about something that you're passionate about. Think about what your visitors are interested in and write about that. When you have enough traffic, you can monetize that traffic with contextual ads like Adsense, Kontera or direct advertisers.
- sell your own products (either electronic or physical). This takes a lot more work because you need to create your own product, but tops on the long term benefits is you are in total control of your online business from product to sale.
- sell other people's products.This is what being an affiliate means. The most apparent benefit to being an affiliate is that you don't have to worry about development of the products you sell. You also get to pick and choose the products that best match your website content and sell them to your visitors.
- provide a service. Think about any skills that are unique to you and how you can sell them online.
- set up a brick and mortar store and then create a website as an extension to your store. Many people find that online sales account for a substantial income and combined with their regular brick and mortar sales, can add up to quite a tidy sum.
- a combination of any of the above.
So you see, an online business is basically about making money online. HOW you make money online first starts with the basic questions (like any other business) :
- What interests you.
- What knowledge and skills are unique to you.
- What talents you have that others don't
Build an online business around what you love and everyday will be like being paid to enjoy yourself. Jump into something just for the sake of money even though you hate it, and everyday will seem like hell.

The only thing I can tell you is that ONLINE businesses can be of two kinds:
1. Products
2. Content
By products, you will need to create a niche product. Otherwise, you're a dead fish. I recommend you focus on something you can create with your hands that people are willing to pay good money for - like a sculpture of some kind that someone with decent money could put on their backyard to add curb appeal or something like that.
For example, a friend of mine crafted a really cool-looking life-size figure of a thinking Don Quixote (from the literary books) and got it sold for $400. The person who bought it sent a picture of the figure thinking in the front lawn. It looked really good, actually.
So that's one way.
If you want to sell little things, you'll have to battle it out with Amazon and all the other major online retailers.
So pick a niche.
2. When it comes to content, I recommend you buy a book that teaches you about the PUBLISHING INDUSTRY.
Imagine that you are a journalist writing MAGAZINE ARTICLES. If you ever want to be successful online, this is what you will ultimately have to do.
Let me give you a couple of things I've done:
1. I sell chess sets that I carve myself out of wood, plastic, candles, soap, and other materials. I sell them on my website that I created.
2. For content, I've created a website where you can learn Spanish. This one is growing slowly - which you will DEFINITELY SEE when you're trying to build your own online business, so don't quit your day job. I'm still not making any money on it, but you have to realize that you have to build a PLATFORM, some kind of foundation so that when people FINALLY visit your site, you have something to offer in regards to interesting and compelling content.

I have other websites with specific topics. But they are pretty much the same, selling advertising space, using Google Adsense, or just selling specific products.

Your question is the magical question that without a real answer. Every person online has a story to tell and an advise to give. To know what works and what doesnt is not an easy job for anyone who is starting.
Everything has a risk factor, and your reaction depends heavily on your expectations. When I first started my online venture my priority was learning and not earning. That is why I consider anything that cost me from then until now is my online college tuition. Because my objective was learning I had the most beautiful journey ever. I cannot beleive what I have learned in two years. OK enough nostalgia.
What I want to say is that you must set your priorities right and your expectations right. Have you ever heard any busienss person who did not lose money. Of course not. Once a person has set himself/herself into the business world which is completely different than the employement world then he/she should have a different mindset.
You will face scams, you will lose money, you will try things that wont work until you make it happen. That is the business world. If you cannot take those facts, then you must think again about establishing your own business wether online or offline.
Let us say you trusted someone to teach you online marketing in return for a certain fee. After few months you discover that this person gave you info that was worth nothing and you can find it for free. Whose mistake was that? It doesnt matter... stop dealing with that person and move on to the new source of information that you found.
You will not be able to learn where to start from the answers that you get here. You will get small pieces of info here, but its upto you what you make of it and you move on in your decisions. |
