you dont say if you are alone in business as a sole trader
if you are and your not buying and selling alot then i would just enter everything in separate books you can also use excel as others have stated to pull all the information together at year end
if you invest in software you will have to spend a considerable time getting used to it and understanding it and if you get in a muddle pay for someone to sort it out
keep it as simple as you can and REMEMBER
an accountant will get you to sign a declaration when he gives you back your accounts stating he is not responsible for the figures YOU HAVE PROVIDED in short you are responsible for your accounts not him so why pay for an accountant

I use Excel - may take you a while to set it up properly but after that it's dead easy. You really should use an accountant too to sort your end-of-year tax out but they should charge you less if you present your books neatly.

If you don't know anything about bookkeeping,taxes ect it doesn't matter what you try your going to end up in trouble sooner or later. Accountants aren't that expensive and yes they will make you sign a declaration saying that they prepared papers according to numbers you provided and their not responsible. Wouldn't you? The truth is people lie so we have to do that.
