Techniques on motivating your employees?
I'm a supervisor at a computer consulting firm. I manage about 5 employees. I'm new at this....how do I keep them motivated and happy?

Run do not walk to Barnes and Noble and read Management for Dummies. It is a great book...in a nutshell, understand what makes each individual tick. Money does not do it for all, respect does. Maintain a high standard and goal but be fair in how you enforce that standard or it will have the opposite result from the intented purpose.

Noticing good things is, well good. Kissing their butt is not. Manage by example, keep it fun and have "occational" incentive programs but like the military model dictates, win their hearts and mind by making sure they believe in the mission- our soliders literally walk through fire and it aint for $ or lunch- it's due to their sense of pride. If you instill that in your people and give in order to get, they will serve you well. A good leader sets the direction then lets the others take the lead only helping when necessary.

IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING, UNDERSTAND THIS...PEOPLE WANT TO DO GOOD! THEY ARE NOT OUT TO GO AGAINST YOU. YOU HAVE TO RESPECT THEM, GIVE THEM THE NEEDED TOOLS THEN GET OUT OF THEIR WAY AND LET THEM SURPISE YOU WITH THEIR CREATIVITY- IMAGINE IF MICHAEL ANGELO OR BETHOVAN WERE MICRO-MANAGED- LET PEOPLE EXCEL AND HELP THEM LIKE A COACH, A FRIEND---NOT A MANAGER. LET YOUR EGO CHILL AND BE HUMBLE AND EFFECTIVE.

Verbal motivation is easy to control, stay positive and firm. Don't let workers slack, but you must be empathetic with your body language. Employees read signals that you sometimes do not wish to send. If you are their friend then you will have better communication and more efficient workers. Every once and a while do something nice to bolster confidence, but do not let them become over confident and slack. Good luck 2 you

u can make a small board in the department showing the best employees for the month names and pics
make invitations for 2 persons for employees who get highest sales or whatever---------or travelling tickets at the end of each yearmany ways
choose the best depending on the feild and the employees theirselves

Genuine recognition is good. Complimenting someone on a particular job or task that is done well. You might buy lunch for all of them one day. Meet fairly regularly and find out what's happening in the department, and if they are having any problems or difficulties. Take a genuine interest in them, and above all, be fair and firm.

Ultimately, people are motivated or not, and are typically happy, or not. There are things you can do that will help, but you cannot make an un-motivated person suddenly motivated, nor can you make an unhappy person happy. So, be realistic in your expectations.

Depends on the type of person. It's very hard to enact just one specific motivation package. Tailor incentives to each employee's motives.

Honor one staff member who has gone beyond the call of duty each month by having a staff of the month award.

Once a month have a pot luck lunch or something similar to encourage staff interaction. A summer corn roast is always fun.

Have a small simple celebration for special days...birthdays, Xmas, Easter, etc.

Set out a pay scale guideline so they know when and what is expected of them in order to get pay increases or promotions.

Make yourself readily available and approachable so that your staff feel comfortable discussing concerns with you.

Hold short weekly staff meetings where concerns, suggestions and questions can be addressed.

Get your staff involved in charitable walk-a-thons or fund raising as a company team.

Hold a 50/50 draw once a month or something along that line.

On a personal note I worked for a large company where the boss brought in free donuts every monday morning just to start our week off right and give the staff time to mingle a bit. Did wonders for morale.

Making the work place a fun and pleasant place, addressing any concerns promptly and treating your staff with respect will ensure that your staff will give their best effort. Good luck.
