Teenager looking to start a small business?
I'm 18 years old, and a sophomore in college. I want to start a small business, partnering with an old friend. I don't know alot about this subject, but I am very ambitious and motivated. I have a deep desire to have my own business and around 5 thousand dollars saved up. How much would it cost to get a small business up and running? Whats a good product idea? I was thinking of starting very small, maybe a mall kiosk. Any feedback?

Do some research as first answer said.

Avoid the solicitations you will be getting to this question.

A good website is entreprenuer.com for some ideas and help.

You can always check with the Federal Trade Commision or BBB to find out if something is legit.

go for it! make sure you do your research!!!!!!

I recommend the following books on entrepreneurship geared for the young people:

- The Young Entrepreneur's Edge : Using Your Ambition, Independence, and Youth to Launch a Succesful Business (Princeton Review Series) -- by Jennifer Kushell
- The Young Entrepreneur's Guide to Starting and Running a Business : NEW: Use the Internet to jump-start your company; Find out where the money is... and ... ideas, from pet care to public relations; -- by Steve Mariotti
- Upstart Start-Ups!: How 34 Young Entrepreneurs Overcame Youth, Inexperience, and Lack of Money to Create Thriving Businesses by Ron Lieber
- Better Than a Lemonade Stand: Small Business Ideas for Kids (Kid's Books By Kids) by Daryl Bernstein
- How to be a Teenage Millionaire by T.R. Adams
- Whiz Teens In Business by Danielle Valle'E

The best business will depend on what you want, how you define to be interesting. A person may consider a pet sitting business to be the most exciting work in the world, while another person would rather watch TV than take care of dogs.

The key is to determine what your interests are, what you want to do, what is suitable for your lifestyle and your overall goals, and what can fit with your resources.

Dan Ramsey in his book "101 Best Home Businesses" has a chapter on how to find YOUR best home business. He suggests these 10 steps:

1. List 5 things you do best
2. List how others would benefit from what you do best
3. Find out how to give people what they want
4. Learn the value of your services to others
5. Find out who else offers similar services
6. Learn from the successes of others
7. Learn from the failures of others
8. Plan your own success
9. Make low cost mistakes
10. Enjoy what you do and how you do it

I dont know..... you really need to do your research... I'm all for independence and working for your self.... but your going to try twice as hard because you are young and you lack many experiences of older adults. Definitely per sue your dreams just make sure you are very knowledgeable of the product you will be offering and the business as a whole, it will be beneficial in the long run for you to fully understand what you are trying to do. Good Luck... I wish you the best.

Starting young has one major benefit: you have far more tolerance for risk. As you get older, you accumulate more responsibility, and your ability to go out on a limb is greatly hindered. I have two suggestions that you should adhere to.

1) You said that you are partnering up. This can be beneficial in that both of you will hopefully be contributing to the success of the company. However, there is a strong chance that one of the partners will not be as focused and hence do a disproportionate amount of the work. Make sure you have some form of an operating agreement (the structure of this will depend on how you organize your company). Be sure to include how ownership is distributed, and (and this is big) OWNERSHIP SHOULD BE DIRECTLY PROPORTIONATE TO THE MEMBER'S CONTRIBUTION. If you fail in setting things up right, you might lose not only a business partner, but a friend as well.

2) Set long-term objectives. This one seems almost too simple, but few people do it and it is one of the big reasons most start-up businesses fail. You must have a clear picture of where you want to take a company. Now don't get discouraged, if this image changes over time. A good business will constantly be changing, but if you lack direction, your company will reflect that.

I got started at 19 years old in real state. Because I was in college, I found it difficult to dedicate much time to starting a company. I noticed, however that people around campus paid an exorbitant amount of money for dorms. So for me to invest in a house and rent the bedrooms to students meant that I could not only make my monthly payments, but double those payments and have extra money left over... all this without sacrificing my social life.

If this isn't the kind of venture you were looking for, I would starting by making a list of all the skills in your group of partners. From there you might get a clearer picture of your options, but remember rule #2. If you don't have a clear picture of where you want to go-- if you just decided to start a company because you're over-anxious, all you're going to do is waste your money. Define clear goals, and you'll discover that money is the least of your concerns. Finance is another issue, but with a good idea, finding investors is easy. Good luck.

If you are interested in starting an office cleaning business, there is an ebook on it at http://www.cleanuptheprofit.com
One of the good things about it is that you only have to do it for a few hours in the evening after everyone has left the office and you can make a lot of money. The website talks about how much you can make for each office.

Does your partner bring something to the business that you can't provide? Such as cash, experience, customers. If not, you should go it alone. If you decide you need the partner, spend the money it will take to have a lawyer review potential problems and fixes. It will be money well spent.

Hi,

Check out http://www.bbb.org (business bureau)

Cheers,
MLMOnlineMagazine

p.s. You can always start making money promoting products and services on the internet. This way you can get first hand experience without risking $5000.

When you promote products to potential buyers on the internet you ONLY get paid a commission when you have made a sale. You DO NOT have to put out ANY of your own money.
