The Pampered Chef vs Mary Kay Cosmetics?
I know what the commission is for both companies. My Mother is a MK consultant. My mom would like to see me sell MK products and my PC consultant would like me to sell PC products. The only problem with the MK thing is that we live in a very small community and my mom is about the only rep in our area and I do not want to take away from her business. In addition, I love all the PC products I get.

What are the advantages and disadvantages to both?

Is either one possible when you have a full time job, 2 kids, Girl Scouts every week, a husband that works 13 plus hours a day and everything else that goes with being a Mom, wife and daughter?

Just wanted some "non-family member' advise as not to sway me one way or the other.

Thanks!

I just want to thank everyone for all the great answers. It is so hard to choose just one for best answer.

I am also very excited to say that I am going to sign my Pampered Chef Consultant agreement in May. All I can do is try it. If I don't like it, I can 't say that I never tried.

However, my Mom is just a little bit disappointed that I did not choose Mary Kay! I told her that I don't want to have to compete with her and I won't have to if doing PC! She even told me that she would have a show for me!

Anyway, Thanks again!

Just wanted to give you a little insight into PC. I've been with PC since 1997. I have 3 children(very active in shcool), a husband who works a swing shift and still manage to get it done.

PC is very flexible. Set when you want to have shows, and do them. I only do shows on Tues. & Thusr. and have a limited number of Sat & Sun's avaliable during the month. So you can determine in the pockets of time you have avaliable when you want to work.

Another thing that I love about PC is that it appeals to everyone, vs just a make-up or jewerly thing. Men and women, young & old can use our products.

Our products generally ship with in one to two days after they are ordered. I just submitted a show on monday, and it's being delivered today, so there isn't any reason to keep an inventory.

If you have a desire to try, do what warms your heart. If you decide that you don't want to go on with PC after your try, you're not going to be out of any money. You'll have your commission, and the products that you earn. If you have any other questions that you would like to ask, please let me know. I would be happy to answer those without trying to sway you to sign like your pc consultant may.

I looked at various options myself a few months ago. I've been a MK consultant for almost 10 years, and the competition is the toughest part. But it's a great company and I have all things positive to say about the opportunity. I also sold Home Interiors a while back.

In seeking additional family income and weighing my options, I ended up narrowing my choice to something that was new and fairly unheard of, and I'm having a blast with it. There are definitely things about the compensation plan with this company that are positively brilliant. I know from experience though, you don't get all the facts at the jump. Most people would feel overwhelmed with so much information, especially when you're attempting to start a new business.

The best thing about becoming a consultant with a direct sales company is that you work on your own schedule. So, yes, if you want to make it succeed, you can. Even with a full-time job and kids' activities, etc.

My advice to you would be to go with the company whose products you believe in the most. When you believe in something 100%, you will be able to sell it. Both companies offer exceptional products and outstanding quality.

I wish you the best of luck, both in making your decision and in getting your business off the ground.

Forgive me but I hate when someone uses the you don't have to stock anything line. It is a choice to carry or not carry inventory having the option is a good thing people not having to wait is a good thing and it really bother me when people make it sound like it is bad sorry I had to get that of my chest.
Since your mom is a MK Consultant you know all the facts but if you want to talk to a third party and ask any questions I would be happy to help. When I started my MK business I worked full time 42 miles away that's one way and I had a 2 year old so yes it fits any schedule. That is the beauty of it. I deicide on MK because I loved the product and since it is consumable it also seamed smart. I felt other direct sales companies you had to lug to much around and do too much work. I also love PC however as a host for PC I feel the host has to do a lot of work as well making specific purchase of food and doing a lot of prep as a MK consultant we do all the work so it is easier to get people to host shows plus a show can be 2-3 people and it really is about providing a service to people and building a relationship not selling something. Which takes me back to the fitting into your schedule I used my training night as my work night inviting guest to the meetings then I got pregnant with my second and was able to quit my full time job so I started holding appointments in my home while she napped and the other child was in pre school.
I say follow your heart what you love you will sell
MK only has 10% of the market and with the launch of our June TV commercials more people will be looking for consultants. It is very thoughtful of you to not want to take away from her MK is all about enriching people's lives and it has truly changed mine so I love to share this opportunity with people and teaching someone new and seeing them reap the rewards is very rewarding. I am sure your Mom feels the same way.
Wishing you much success.

I am a Mary Kay Consultant, but I also love PC, so I see your dilemma. Both of them offer you flexibility so you can work around your family. As far as inventory is concerned, you do NOT have to purchase inventory in Mary Kay, it's an option - there's no reason why you can't work it the same way as PC.

However, having owned a retail establishment prior to joining Mary Kay, there is one HUGE difference - and for me, this is NON-NEGOTIABLE - I will NOT put that amount of effort into ANY business that does not offer, on EVERY level, a 50% margin! It just isn't worth my time. One should not have to wait until they've moved up into a higher level in the company to make the higher profit on their sales. Granted, there is a $200 minimum wholesale purchase requirement for the discount in Mary Kay, but think about it - sell just 4 Miracle Sets and you're there. That's one skin care class.

This doesn't mean that PC won't be your better choice - you have to figure out what you want out of it. Since your mom's in Mary Kay, you know the ins and outs of the business. If it's worked for her, it will work for you, too. I travel out of town if needed to expand my customer base and enjoy writing the mileage and other business expenses off my taxes, but you'll get that with either business.

Hope that helps, and good luck with your decision! Exciting times for you!

I just want to put my 2 cents in!

I was a MK lady for a few years. I too live in a very small town. We have 6 MK ladies that I personally know, and yes, the competition is steep! When the previous answer states that all you have to do is sell 4 miracle kits, it wasn't that easy for me. We live in a semi-rural town, and not a lot of women can afford the entire kit all at once. I would either have to take post dated check from them, or sell them a little at a time. My Director was constantly on me about putting in a least a $200 order, but my sales just weren't there. I ended up putting in orders with my own money, and I ended up losing out in the end. I can honestly say I lost money on MK not make the 50% as promised.

Now, with PC...I find I have a bigger fan base in my small town. the small town people seem to love PC. My sister and friend from different states had "Virtual Parties" and even the men joined in. The men were actually the bigger buyers! I only do 2 or 3 shows a month. I do not work it like is probably could, but I do what I have time for. I have 2 girls who are very involved in cheerleading, tennis, and 4-H. I myself am very involved in the Relay For Life, which is why I only have a small amount of time. I use PC as my "ME" time. It is more of a hobby for me, but one day I would like to make it more.

Saying all of that, I have made over $1500 since October, and that is only 12 shows. I am a PC believer, and I would strongly encourage anyone in a small town to consider it. Oh BTW, there are 2 PC ladies in our town!

Good Luck!!!!

As a PC Consultant, you really don't keep inventory. The shipping time is very quick. I know consultants that do PC in addition to a full time job. I am a stay at home mom, so it works with anyone! I love how flexible it is. I also loved that I started earning commission immediately, on my first show! And I don't have to make any purchases myself to stay active. I have loved my experience so far...as well as the products! Whatever you choose, I hope you can enjoy it as much as I do!

pursepartyamber
I would say choose the product that you like best and think you can sell well. If you do not have a lot of time you will want to chose one you can sell without having to do a lot of parties.

I was looking a little over a year ago and decided to go with Purse Party Inc. b/c I love purses and jewelry!

Just stick with your heart!

justwondering312
You sound too busy to add this to being super mom...this might put you over the edge. Consider cost of gas...cancellation of orders. If you do it is obvious you like PC....you will do better selling product you really enjoy! Also, being busy with your children can actually build you business quickly with all the contacts from the childrens schools and sport activities.

I love Pampered Chef -

Home parties are hard work and generally they pay about the same. Look in the area your in to see what type of clientele would benefit from your product.

I actually have experience with both. Eventually you run into a problem, people to sell your products to. Then I came across this company with is similiar in structure to MK and PC, but I am also able to receive infomercial calls in my home from people wanting to buy the products. It is great. Give it a look, show your mom too and she what she thinks:

A PC sales person you don't have to stock anything the customers buy the products from the catalog and then you send it to there home where as MK you have to stock eveything and that is your monies tied up hoping that some one buys it so you can get your monies back that you have to invest and with so many products that can add up real quick b/c when people buy MK products they expected there product immediatley.
