I wrote a blog on advice for working from home - it's not a commercial and I make no recommendations. there is a link in the 2nd paragraph of my profile here on answers. Also there is a link to "The MLM Legality Test".
It's not as simple as taking someone's suggestions as what is best... do some research on your own... ask questions and some of them are tough to ask, even tougher to get real answers. But if you do your due diligence, you will find the right company for you.

Most people who say home based busines's are scams say this for one or two reason's. One they have something of their own to offer you that they would benefit from so they try to redirect your attention to what they want. Other's did not go into their home based business with the right mind frame. They figured once they started, they should be making thousand upon thousand's of dollars immidiatly, since they didn't do that and treated it like just an ordinary 9 to 5 job, and found that they had to make some sort of effort, they dropped it and claimed they were "all" scams. Not one person could be a part of every single solitary business around. There are literally thousands of them. Unless they picked up a business a day and put it down within their first 24 hours. Not likely. Any business you get into, you can succeed if you have the drive for. There are so many different ones, the best advice I can give you when getting involved in the right one for you is one that you'd have a passion for.
My husband and I started our own business over six years ago in this and it's just incredible. Do you think we'd continue with it for 6 years if it was a scam? I don't think so. Our business supports our family of 6. We have 4 children all with their own activities that they take part in and we are apart of too. We got involved in the telecommunications industry. We partnered up with a 15 year old world wide company that offer services that people use every day and pay for anyway. Services such as local and long distance telephone services, Internet, video phones, VOIP, digital, Satellite T.V. and all the major cellular phone companies have partnered up with them too. How many people do you know that uses any of these services? How would you like it if you could save people money on their services that they are going to be using every day, and make a percentage of everyone's payments every single month? Month after month, year after year? Think about how much money you can make in this industry. It's just incredible.

Don't listen to "They", it's not true that most home businesses are scams at all.
There are many, many home businesses that are legal, lucrative and registered with the BBB as well as the DSA.
I don't know what would be considered a large start up cost, but my most lucrative business was $400 to get started, and I earned that back in a short period of time.
The thing to understand with any home business, is that it requires effort. It also has a learning curve as most home business operators do not have any formal education on the subject, so you have to be coachable and willing to learn.
I have a few home businesses, all of them are growing because they compliment each other. I have been working from home for many years and if you treat it like a million dollar business and dedicate yourself, you will earn far more than you ever could at a regular job.

From the question I get that you are still in the planning phase. A home business can be offline or online. But before you get into that decision, the first thing you will need to think about is which industry are you interested in. After that there will be other questions to answer so that you can arrive at the best formula that suits you. Once you answer those questions, it will be very hard for you to fall into the scam trap.
Most people who fall into the scam trap start searching for anything that could bring money. Now the word "anything" means there is no plan, which means the right forumula for falling into scam plans.
There are so many pointers that I can give you, but it will be too long to answer you here. I have written some articles that include some of these questions and have some good pointers for anyone who wants to start an online business.

Hi,
The key to do a good Internet business is self-motivation. when you start an Internet based business you will be faced to many challenges and obstacles. There is no way you could get instant profit unless you are very very ... lucky .. lucky person. You need to possess the ability to push yourself ahead. Your drive and determination will be reinforced with every new sale you made. So do not throw your money just because you read interesting ads that promise you instant profit. Every site, of course will try to convince you to join and invest either your time or money.
So, my suggestion is :
1. read all info first, try to understand the business and positioned your self in the business perspective that you are interested in.
2. Set up your limit. This can be your time and money. (currently I dedicate 2 hrs a day and around (30$ - 70$)/month to invest into the business. You could go for the free stuff and still get income, but it takes longer and more effort from you.

I recently found a home based business that only cost me $25 to start (because they had a special discount for the month of March). I set my hours and do work when I want. I only contact people who have already shown an interest in working at home themselves or people looking to save money on their benefits. And it's in the healthcare field, a great field to be in.
