This guy wants me to shell out 400/month for listing in the yellow pages, is this a good deal?
Hello, I was thinking of listing in the yellow pages for my freelance computer business. Do you think I will get a good response? This guy I am talking to says I might get 1 call every 2 days

the yellow pages are expensive. at my last job we would spend thousands--and i'm talking around 35-40 thousand bucks a year for yellow pages ads. they're expensive, but think about it--where do most people go first?

the main problem i had with our yellow pages was that some idiot had decided that our services should be listed under "rubbish" instead of "trash". we were a trash hauling company. how many people in the US think to themselves, i need a new "rubbish" hauler? NO ONE.

all our competitors had full page ads in the yellow pages under "trash haulers"---we were the ONLY one with a full page ad under "rubbish".

i kept bringing this up---that NO ONE in the US would look under rubbish. the term 'rubbish' is a British term--not a Yankee term---here in the states we say "trash hauling". but the sales manager and general manager just looked at me like i had two heads--and then resumed their conversation about where to play golf. -(all this during a meeting to cut costs and improve the bottom line)

i finally shut up about it---let them spend $40 thousand a year for an ad under 'rubbish'---it serves them right.

NO! If you do your homework/research you will find that more than 85% of people search for what they want on the internet! Yellow pages aren't worth the paper they're printed on. As a matter fact, the printed page is not longer a very good investment for advertising. My suggestion would be, #1 have a website, and purchase word searches that would bring people to your site, #2 purchase advertising space on places like Yahoo. If you company is local with storefront, try using the local newspaper's website to advertise a banner ad. Good luck!

My boyfriend owns his own business and that is around the price that he pays for advertisement. It ain't cheap.

Computer business is a service that you get calls and repeated calls only by referrals and some cold calls.
for 400 a month you can print thousand of flayers and distribute them in neighborhood mailboxes.
this service is mostly in the neighborhood and its the most successful way to go.
try the flayers first, you target the area of YOUR choosing, which is close to you and by doing so you centralize your operation maximize your gain and reduce you expenses(travel- Gasoline&time)

Good luck

that seems a bit expensive to me

He is right, you "might" get a call every......

You are talking to a commissioned sales person, so you have done the right thing to think before entering into a irrevolkable contract.

Best advise is to:

a. advertise a line listing. No box, no photos, nothing but your company's name and phone.

b. place that line listing in several area phone books.

c. join a local chamber of commerce and attend regularly

Freelance computer business is a very competitive business nowadays. To list in a yellow page at 400/mth
is a very easy thing to do, You just give him 400/mth and
hope for the best. That's not the way to do business. If your business is doing v. very well and you can AFFORD 400/mth. Then it's alright, But you're only freelance. Keep the money. Do the hard way. Look for your clients yourself. Don't depend on yellow page for your clients.

No, its not worth it! Just list your business in every online directory you can find. Yellow pages are just going to help you locally and I assume that you can work in a virtual environment so I suggest advertising in the same fashion - broadly on the Internet.

Hmm. I'd go for it if it's an actual ad, and not just some hilighted text.
It's only 4800 dollars a year (I heard it was 10,000!) and I know I use the phone book an awful lot. My whole family does. If you're paying by month... can you quit if it's not working for you, or are you n a contract for a full year? Is it a city phonebook or a rinkydink suburb?

Check around on forums, see what other people say.
