The income opportunity is incredible in home based business. You just need to find one that you'd enjoy getting involved in and one that has a great compensation plan. Most home based business cost under $500. Some cost more depending on what it is you want to do.
I don't know what you like to do, so I can only tell you what my husband and I started over six years ago and point you out to some others to take a look at. Ours well supports our family of six. We have four children ages 10, 6, 3 and 1. It is also becoming a major funding source for non-profit organizations.
We got involved in the telecommunications industry with a world wide company that's over 15 years old. We've been featured in several magazines Inc 500 rated us the 22nd fastest growing company. They offer services that people use every day and pay for anyway, but now they can have a lower cost. Services such as local and long distance phones, Internet, digital phones, video phones (you can see the person your taking to live)VOIP, Satellite TV, and all the major cellular phone companies like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Alltell, Nextell etc. have partnered up with them too.
How many people do you know, or know of, that uses one or more of these services? How would you feel if you could save people money on services that they're already using? Every time they pay their bills each month, you make a percentage off these bills every single month. Huge income opportunity. It's incredible how much money is involved in this industry.

I own a business I run from my home and it is doing pretty well. Made $1,000 on first day live. Of course its e-Commerce since its run from my home.
I recommend running a retail store type from home or some sort of consulting group. Otherwise, a true to the word business is very difficult to run from home. Most business from home is just resale, design, or consulting.
You should first obtain a permit or license. You will need a Resellers Permit or a Business License that can be obtained at your State Board of Equalization or on websites that assist with legal matters. A plus to this is if you have a Reseller's Permit, you get whole prices and you will not be charged tax by the manufacture. A business it self does not have any legal involvement other then when registering for your Merchant Account, which is to receive payments, and your Reseller's Permit. A business itself does not need insurance because all Liability depends on the type of ownership. I am guessing your company will be a Sole Proprietorship or Partnership thus putting all responsibility on you and/or your partners. For taxes, you may ONLY charge tax to buyers in the same state. All customers from other states do not have to pay tax.
I really recommend having an online site and here is a few tips about online sites:
First you need to submit your website to major search engine such as Dog Pile, Ask, MSN, Google, and Yahoo. Submission should be pretty easy, just go to the search engine page and look around for the option to submit a site.
The next step is to find affiliates. You will be amazed at the power of word-by-mouth. Find complementary websites and try to talk to the owners/management group and put a link of their site on yours and they will put one of yours on theirs. Scratch my back and I will scratch your back. When I said complementary, here is an example of what I mean, someone has a site selling shoes, a complementary site would sell socks, shoe polish, shoe repair service, custom shoe laces, and all other products or services related to shoes.
Your next step would be paid/free advertisement. Pay money to a marketing source of your choice and get your ads everywhere. Advertisement can be done freely as well and works just as well. Join as many forums related to your products in anyway possible. Just go join the forums, answer questions and build a reputation. In your profile signature, put a banner of your site or a link. As time goes by you can stop answering questions on the forum, and just say, "Hey, go to my site, I sell this."
So there it is, for a home business:
1. Think of a Product and Target Consumer
2. Get a Merchant Account
3. Get a Permit or License
4. Find a Web Host
5. Search Engine Submission
6. Complementary Affiliates/Sponsors
7. Advertisement, Paid/Free
That should generate more visitors to your site as time goes by. Remember, all business services/stores take time to start up initially. So many competitors on the virtual worlds, usually takes 6 months to get weekly clients let alone daily. You have to have money to make money!

Heya! My home Based business is a Hybrid of sorts. I have been self-employed for over 10 years and I have had a LOT of experience, and I have been able to turn this experience into a consulting business helping people like you weed out the static. I have also found a lot of success by finding really good companies and going into direct/network marketing opportunities because of the flexibility and collective business building aspects.
I often recommend to people, that they simply find out what it is they like to do, OR find an industry that they have interest in and jump on it! ALSO look for people that are already self employed, running their own HBB and are willing to Mentor you, IF this is your first HBB.

The success of any business in not restricted to one point only. As I do not know much about you I give you a very brief logic which responsible for success of any business.
Remember three Ps i.e., PPP. It represents People, Product and Place. For any product you need to have buyers(People), if you have people you need to have the Product that they want or can buy from you. If you have product and people which does not match you have to find the place where both match. e.g., If you make costly and high value products you cannot sell them to poor. You have to find rich people for your products and you wont find them living in low society. You decide first what you can and want to make. There are many business you can do from home and make good living. |

I run a small business from home and get loads of help with training, advertising etc. It is selling web design, Live business centres, online seminar rooms etc. My support team are great, free too, they show me exactly how to advertise and provide professional letters etc to send to prospects.
There is a monthly fee as everything is included online but the sales cover this easily.
