I have had small service business since 1999 and I have had the best success with a small yellow page ad and an occasional special in the newspaper classified. Try not to get caught up in spending lots of money on advertising though because they drain your bottom line.
The best advertising for me has been happy customers telling others. When I got started I always went the extra mile to make my customers happy, and that has always paid off many times over. |

I rely mainly on word of mouth and leads. I have not had any luck with emailing, people just delete them. If you are going to advertise on the net, I recommend buying target ads.
I think your best bet is to get out there and talk to people, give them your card, give them a 1 minute overview of what you do and move on. If they are truly interested in building a business they will get back to you. If they don't...Next! It's all about numbers, the more people you talk to the more will check out your business. |

It depends on the type of business you have. If you are a hot dog stand, a website will not do a thing for you. Your customers are mostly foot traffic.
If you are fashion shop, your best resource is advertisement and catalogs could be sent to potential customers in certain postal codes in your region of people within the economic group you are targeting. A website may also work.
If you are a lawyer, accountant or some other professional, yellow pages ads and newspaper print ads work the best, as well as word of mouth (from satisfied customers). |

WORD OF MOUTH!! Get and Ask for referals from all your customer/clients. Put a sign on your car. Always have a business card on you and give them out to everyone you talk to. The good ole chamber of commerce. As a member and owner i perfer to do business with fellow members that i know from the breakfeast meetings. |

1. Yellow pages with big ads.
2. Local newsletters with focused circulation in your target market.
3. Flyers work but not when passively kept at various locations...they work when actively distributed through someone intelligent enough to answer questions. Use this like a business card!!! Give it away as your contact information.
4. Referrals by other small business owners...i.e. make a community...get a network of small business owners that swap customers by giving discounts for referrals from each others networks/customer base.
5. Yahoo local ads.
Make sure you are aware of the reason for advertising...whether you are doing this for branding/marketing awareness or to drive revenues through deals...that way you can track achievement appropriately...most small business owners make a hash of basic marketing stuff.

You need to identify your target market? From there decide were that market will most likely see or read your advertising. For example your not going to advertise on the Internet if your product is intended to be sold to elderly. Its not rocket science, make it fun and track your results. Don't re-invent the wheel see what your completion is doing and modify it to your company and style. Also don't just try it once and give-up if it doesn't work your need to hit that person at least 3 times before the will respond. Geico & Progressive say it takes 6 times for some one to call back on the ads. Please see below sites that will help! |
