Unemployed Military Wife,Should I start a business?
I have moved to so. Mass with my husband and have been here 2 months and cannot find a job nearby. There are plenty in boston, but that is about 50 miles (and probably about 1 1/2 hr of traffic one way) away. With gas prices as they are, I do not think going there to work would profit me much. I have been checking for more local jobs but there is only one job for web design (which I am learning but have no real experience in) I want to start a business, but I am shy about that because the last business I had (bath & body) failed due to a lack in funding. I am currently paying back the loan for that, so if I start a business it will have to be something with less $. I have looked for other types of jobs, even as a cleaning lady but even those want experience and references. I can't do childcare because I have no experience there either. I could take fast food or work in retail, but with my bills, I would not even break even witht that pay. I am discouraged and don't know what to do.

Why not take real estate classes? They are inexpensive, don't take long (couple months or less) and the market should be recovering shortly so you may be able to make extra money doing that. Not a lot of startup costs either.

Good luck.

Although I practice financial planning in the West Indies, I think I can help you a bit. (read: DISCLAIMER!)
That being said, you should look for smart options for making money. There are 2 ways of making money for all economies and for all people, and that's either from investments or from earning an income. My best suggestions for investment income are:
1. real estate investing (requires learning about buying commercial complexes, apartment buildings, buildings or homes to fix-up and re-sell; does not require a real estate license)
2. mutual fund returns (and other like products)

My best suggestion for earning an income is to start your own business. Not everyone is cut out to run their own business, so if you have the passion but don't feel you have enough talent for all the work required, you can consider partnering w/someone or hiring key staff to fill any gaps you have personally. Most importantly, create a business plan! Look online for free downloads of a template or sample to guide you in preparing your own. Present this to your lender(s) or investor(s) to show that you have thought through everything, esp. financially (pricing, start-up costs, ongoing expenses, loan servicing, and what-ifs). You can hire a pro to do this for you, but I suggest you at least have a crack at working things out this way before strangers see what you are trying to achieve.

starting your own business is not for the faint of heart as you've learned. you need to do something amazingly well and much better than other people, you need capital and you need to be prepare for not turning a profit for a good, long time. if it's paying work you want, however, you need to start at the bottom, get training and work your way up the ladder, just like everyone else. every employer says they want experience and references, but every employee at one time had none and had to start out anyway. don't give up and be willing to accept anything just for the experience. keep track of your contacts, follow up and in a while you'll have a resume of good experience with good references.

Mrs military; at no time did you mention what
your occupational passion was. YOU should not under any circumstances start a biz
without having such passion.

Tell me about your bath biz that you
borrowed to start and that you have closed
and are still paying off a loan for.

IF you had $1m, what would you do with it?

I ask a lot of people that to help them
get thinking and the answers often surprise me for they have no clue.

Medical and Business Information
There are a number of things that you could do. It sounds like you are in somewhat of a small town. You could try starting a meal replacement biz if you are good at cooking. If you had a bath and body biz before you may want to revisit that. Take a look at the biz through a new pair of eyes. Look at why it failed and how you could cut corners. Sometimes you just have to manage your funds a little closer. But if you are dead set against going that route again if you are artistic you could try hand painting candles. If you are not good at painting try the Donna Dewberry One Stroke Method. Just type in One Stroke with Donna Dewberry. You will find practice sheets. With practice sheets a little paint and a few brushes you will be good in no time and you can start selling your wares. People including myself love candles especially ones with an artistic flare. Good luck. email me if you would like more ideas.

my hubby is active duty army, and you know the drill with the moves and what not. You need a job that can grow and move with you, little to no product on hand. That being said, what can you do, there's tons of stay at home jobs, mary kay, mineral gurls...blah blah blah. In the end with those jobs, you have to sell for someone else, and usually have to wait for a check or for the money to clear. I've done them all, and granted, some are very worth it, but like the gentleman above said, you have to have a passion for this. Without it you tend to burn out after a bit. For me, I love to sew and crochet. I got into all things baby...wasn't hard, lol I have 5 kids. so creativity on spinning something old into new was easy for me. If you are the crafty sort, invest in a sewing machine and try it out. Some bases if you are near one, has a lending tree to keep the wives busy. There are online sites that you can sell your goods with ease. there's always eBay, but I've fallen for etsy.com you only pay a small percentage on the finale cost to list it all. there are tons of things to do to turn a buck, and enjoy at the same time. good luck!
