Think outside of the box. What are some things that are missing in your area? What are some things that people need that they may have to travel quite a ways to purchase? What are some things in your area that may be a bit expensive that you could market for less? Ask yourself as many questions as possible, maybe conduct some surveys, etc. Just tap into your imagination and explore every option. Also, think about starting a home-business with a company that already has a proven track record of success and a simple system that you could not only follow, but teach others to do as well to leverage yourself.

Does you town have a Chamber of Commerce? Usually they have retired executives who give FREE advice on start up business. It is a service called S.C.O.R.E

My wife and I have a home based business where we provide people who dont have insurance like contractors, service industry employees, small business employees, college students, and sales people a card that provides them with significantly discounted rates on dental, medical, chiropractic,perscriptions, and optical care. They can use it at several big names stores, like Target, Sears, JC Penny's, Lens Crafters, etc. There is also a list of doctors, dentists, etc all over the country who honor the card. I think they have over 22,000 card holders so far and the business is legitimate and the company has agreements and is accredited to sell them. They have been in business for over 15 years and its really easy to do.
The investment is next to nothing. We started with a computer, internet, and a really cool lady who helps us when we need it.
The pay is awesome. The business almost runs itself. And most important, we dont have to be embarrassed around our friends doing it.

I didn't think a can recycling plant would be easy. However you could offer recycling services, if you gather people's recyclables in a truck and sell them to the recycling centers you may find some profits.
But anyways, you have a small town, so what's the markets contained in there? What do the people need?
Figure out your market, then figure out what they need and meet that need.
Seems you may have a solution in recycling because you mentioned it, so figure out what recycling options are available to you and how you could exploit this market niche. |

It all depends. What does your town need. When you are starting a business it is always about fulfilling a need. Our creating a need for your product or service that folks didn't even realize. who would have thought 50 years ago that people would have a need to be reached via telephone while walking down the street. Let your mind wander.
There is no such thing as a bad idea just an incorrect execution of that idea. |

What do you like doing? If you just need money to start coming in, then one of the easiest businesses to start is lawn care. You can gradually build up to having equipment -- start with a small pick-up truck, a mower, string trimmer, edger, and such, then add equipment rom there.
It's not entirely seasonal -- mowing in summer, raking in the fall, put gardens to rest in late fall, snow removal in winter, garden prep and lawn seedng in spring...
And there are a bazillion books in your free library with all the information you need to be a pro. |

Have you considered a vending business. You can start one up pretty cheap. A snack and soda business can be started for about $1000, a gumball route for a couple hundred. Finding locations is the hardest part. I setup a website and get most of my leads from there. Take a look at http://www.bluegroupvending.ca as an example. Have you thought about a pet care business? There are several businesses you could start with pets with little start up costs. Here are a few ideas:
Pet sitting, pet photographer, poop scooper, dog walker.
It will depend on your current skills and the type of pets you feel comfortable working with.
