lvillejj | What are good ways to motivate my employees? |
They are happy, complacent, lazy, and well paid. At the end of the year every one is rewarded with a bagel and pastry party, and they recieve bonuses regardless of how they perform. Any ideas? |

Surprisingly, its not money. Money is a short term motivator. Its the meaning of your business that make your employees feel like they are doing something positive and adds meanings to their life. You as the owner, is the motivator who let your employees believe your business exist for a good casue. You could be selling anything, but you are determine that what you are doing not only makes money, but you help mankind. Easier said than done, but by looking at every successful corporate in the world, its the reason why they have the best employees. |

I'm a hard worker...I've worked for places that shower you with bonuses and perks and for places that are TIGHT. While I enjoy the perks, they are not what generally spur me to give 110%. Two things usually encourage me to go above and beyond in the workplace:
1. Excitement in the atmosphere.
I love the challenge of a new product, new promotion, new client, or a new philosophy from management. If the prevailing attitude at the company is one of excitement, pride, striving toward consistent new goals...I push harder.
2. Being encouraged to a higher standard.
The administrators in my work experience to whom I've given my best efforts all have one thing in common--they consistently offer their employees genuine praise and they encourage them with "positive" speech.
In contrast, the management style that I have the most difficult time being enthusiastic about working hard for are the negative ones...everything is an issue, everything has to be micromanaged...the only comments are complaints.
I can tell from your post that you are a fair manager--the employees are well paid and are rewarded with bonuses. But I cannot help but notice that you have described your employees across the board as complacent and lazy.
If they truly are worthless, you need new employees. If they are decent workers which are unmotivated, you need a more positive approach. |

you could start with a cat of nine tails and work up to shotgun.
i think you should call them as individually and the two off your set goals and only reward those that made or exceeded their goals. |

crikey hire me! i'm a hard worker! oh no wait...that's not the question now is it?
the question you need to ask is WHY are they complacent and lazy? are you enabling this type of behaviour? Also, is the behaviour of your employees affecting the bottom line? perhaps you should make it known that a bonus at the end of the year will now reflect productivity instead of it being a christmas gift. (or end of fiscal year gift)
You could begin initiative programs, although i dont know what to suggest, because i dont know what your company does.

is a website you might go to to get a broader idea of why your staff isnt up to your standards....

Everyone gets complacent and lazy eventually, it's human nature. Give them new challenges. Have each one come up with a list of projects that they believe will benefit the company in the upcoming year or six months, without telling them why. Then have them each pick one project that THEY must outline, and process all the way through. For example: Your receptionist/secretary might come up with an update to the rolodex to an all digital format. At the end of the given deadline, have each employee do a self evaluation, and then you do one as well, then sit down and talk about the pros and cons, performance, enthusiasm etc. Perhaps have a point basis given during the evaluation, or grade and then use that grade to help determine year end bonuses? |

I have a hard time believing that your employees are well paid when at the end of a year the reward is a bagel and pastry party even with the bonuses. Having said that, maybe hiring a outside consulting firm that could evaluate your staff and the level of their contributions to the company and to the relationship to the salary they receive |

YOU GOTTA MOVE TO IMPROVE!
 |
You don't have their respect. They don't see you as a leader. Are you having eye-level meetings every Wednesday? How do they feel about the job their doing? Are you afraid to lose these people? You need to take some professional human resource managing courses. The entity lives from the head down. If you see them as complacent, lazy ect...then that's probably how they see you, as an ineffectual figure head ...Good luck |
