What are reasons, besides staff theft, for till shorts when cashing up tills at end of day?
I really need to know if anyo other shop managers or business owner has found any strange reason, especially procedure related e.g. change or float related, to explain excessive till shorts at end of day e.g around £5 to £30. Unless all our staff are on the nick (possible) I think it must be an issue wioth our procedures. It has gone on for months now and I am at my wits end. Cheers.

Not currently in the retail side, but whne I used to be it was very much human error which seemed to be to do with incorrect change - eg someone giving change for a £20 when they were only given £10 etc. What I can't understand is that modern tills seem to be fool proof because you have to enter the amount of cash tendered and the till calculates the change due. I find it difficult to believe that there are multiple problems with several tills and can only imagine that the fault must lie with the float.
Sorry can't be much more help.

Inform your staff off your concerns and arrange for a training of tills for all, no exceptions, ensure that they place any notes in view until the correct change given, before placing it in correct place, if this fails have a talk with the local police as to how you may catch the thief or thieves if you have any, from what you say you must have, only other way is to put a trusted person on the till who the other staff have to take all their goods to and let that one person have access to the till only, with a back up for breaks and holidays, if there are those who say are you accusing them , say no but neither can you sustain the losses that you are, we had a system where uniform had no pockets and a camera was sited over the till , we finally got the message over and that losses dropped , even left money out that the police had doctored with dust that showed up on the hands of the person who had nicked it.before you get to this level check with the police and labour laws.

i worked tills, but i'm no manager.
but only reasons we had for being short, was change was given wrong and the money was counted wrong before or after the shift.

Apart from human error the only explanation is that you have one or more untrustworthy staff working for you.

once had a problem with epos
that's the scanning system it was charging the customer one price then adding up a totally different figure
so something costing £5 was charged at £5 but added £7 onto the till registry
the it department said it was something to do with central pricing and 2 different prices on the system
confused the f out of me I sacked 2 staff as well
did get them in and apologies cost me big time had to pay them for the time they were out of work
this was only happening on 5 lines

customer could of given wrong amount and employee didn't catch it, thought it was a higher value bill.

employee could of counted wrong or given the wrong change back.

plain and clear theft.

recent change on register, re-program, something not listed as the right price, says one price but adds up another on daily total.

draw was short to begin with at the start of the day.

something rung up twice or as an error and was never removed.

if you have a cash register issue, best is to count the draw at beginning of day, between each shift change, at end of day, keep it locked, 1 key, only person schedule should be in it for any reason. surprise counts during the day. sooner or later you will narrow down the issue or the person.

I've even loaded a safe w/ extra cash to catch a manager stealing. Instead of marking down that the safe was over in cash, they wrote down even and pocketed the difference.

Unless your people can't count, I would say theft might be your problem. Make sure they are counting the money back.

Often, a short cash draw happens due to employee carlessness. In the states (and I'm sure overseas), an employee thinks they received one bill, yet it was a smaller denomination, and give change for a higher bill.
Customers can cause this too. Telling the employee that they presented a larger bill in hopes of getting more change. A suggestion is to see if it is one employee who is always short, or if it is across the borad. If you find it is only one person, I suggest taking that person off the register.

The most common problem is change giving.

Notes get put into the drawer and change given - the customer then says that they gave a larger denomination note, so more change is given because the cashier has no way of proving otherwise.

Any note should be placed on the lid of the tray so that when change is given, the original tender is still on show - there can no dispute as to how much was given to the cashier.

Another reason could be that the till is used as a 'petty cash' drawer as well, and monies are removed, to buy coffee, toilet rolls etc, all small day to day running things, but no 'slip' is put into the till to let others know.
This can add up considerably over time.

Hope you get it sorted soon - it's an expensive loss.

Many shops now install a camera overlooking the till, 'just to make certain' !

Someone could carelessly give back too much change.

Could it be your register?
If it doesn't ring up a sale, and a cashier takes the cash for it, the till would be over.

If the cashier gives back too much change, it would be short.

If a customer quick changes your cashier (confuses him to give back too much change for a hundred, for example) the till would be short.

Could the register be calculating the change incorrectly?

Call your systems help desk and see if any other companies using their software are coming up short.

I was only charged 27 p for a bill that was over £10 today. I told the salesgirl as should would have been in trouble.

Refunds not being properly applied, high value notes mistakenly being given as change. A fault with the till tallying system.

As financial people in the normal company we budget for these losses. It can happen for money received interpreted as wrongful or change given out wrong.

You are fortunate to work in GBP and not USD! All their money looks the same and even leads to more confusion! There is no difference between a $1 and $10 note except if you look and concentrate on the bill!

Remember that items can be entered wrongful on the register. From time to time the operator could have returned items and that could have caused error as well.

As I stated, we budget from time to time for shortages although strong measures are implemented not to have them occur.

Cheers mate

I've seen this happen a few times. It was only theft ONCE. Other times it was because the supervisor miscounted the float, because a bag of change was put in the wrong till, because the change order was misread, because someone made a genuine mistake changing a note during a busy period, because the till count was wrong at changeover or counted wrongly at the end of the day and finally because the supervisor wrote the wrong count next to the wrong till number. We were also robbed once but there was a lot more than £30 missing on that day!

We had CCTV at our cash desk. They say it's to watch the customers but it's really there to keep an eye on the staff. If you think your staff are stealing, consider getting some installed. You're powerless if you can't prove it.

Mistakes happen.

When I first started my first job at a till, I made big mistakes. The first few days I was £10 too low.

Because people are hurried, they probably make mistakes when handing out change.

If they aren't stealing then this is a possibility.

Do the staff have to log on to the till? You should try finding out who is causing the problem.

I managed a business for 3 years. And the only time our tills were short was because of miss counting change or theft.
I would keep track of who is working when the till is short. Also, I made it so that each employee had to count in, and out their own tills and no one was allowed to use their tills except for me. That made it a lot easier to keep track. It was a small party store so I only had 4 employees.

Trouble
I'd be very worried if I were you looking at those amounts!!
Other reasons could be someone giving out the wrong change, or notes getting stuck in the counter cash or under the till drawer, but not for months!
First thing is to get your staff to come in 10 minutes early and count the float in their till.
Make sure they write down excatly what they have in each of the denominations- e.g £1 in 1ps. and make sure you either stay late at night or come in very early to count the float before them. This way you can rule out if it's been counted wrong.
Secondly, make sure that only one or two people per day use 1 till, so you can narrow it down to see if there is a problem with the till.
I would also advise that you or a supervisor have till keys and that only yourselves cash up the tills. That way you are eliminating anyone from opening tills when they feel like it.

To be honest, it doesn't sound good and the only other way you can do it is by counting all the tills yourself at the end of the day and at the beginning.
Good luck and I hope it isn't one of your staff!!!

I have noticed many people do not know how to count very well. Oh they make it from 1 to 100 OK but have trouble subtracting in their heads. I usually can give a clerk a little more change than they ask for so I may get a quarter rather than 2 dimes and some pennies. Many have no idea how to figure this out. Same with bills. I may want $5.00 instead instead of 3 ones. Again they are lost. I think we have to blame the schools on this one, or should I say they can't calculate this

sometimes the associate manning the cash register just doesn't pay close enough attention to what they're doing with cash because in this day and age, cards are more common and more and more people use them while shopping on a regular basis. from your details however, it seems like more than just human error. maybe you need some new help. hire some jehovah's witnesses. they won't steal.
