What are the best businesses to set up near a college campus?

Each town is going to vary from another. You might want to do an informal survey of students. Most campuses frown on commercial solicitors so I'd suggest checking into that before soliciting students on campus. Perhaps contact the Career Center on campus; they may be able to assist you further. Or hire a few people to conduct surveys in areas where students frequent -- public gathering places, festivals, fairs, etc. -- be sure to check with the appropriate people before doing that.

Take a look around your town -- do you see a service that's sorely lacking? Where do college students spend their money?

Some ideas:

* Cheap restaurants -- students don't have a lot of money on hand but still love to go out to eat

* Bookstores -- campus bookstores tend to be overpriced

* Bars -- self-explanatory, haha

* All night copy places, a la Kinko's ® -- the library is open limited hours so having an all night establishment is great for those pulling all-nighters

* Daycare -- many students have children & need a safe place for them while in classes

* Career counseling -- what now? after graduation

* Consignment/thrift stores -- again, not a lot of money in hand but still love to shop

* Apartment finding service -- this would be especially handy to students moving from out of the area

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Rental properties and rent-to-own stores.

College kids don't want to own anything they'd have to move....

BurnLounge--have your own personalized online music store. Invite family, friends or anyone to browse, sample and buy music. I have a store at http://burnlounge.com/mlbliss and I enjoy doing this!!

BurnLounge is a fantastic new deal on the internet! They just started in November 2005 and have grown quite rapidly since. They have music sites now, but will be adding ringtones, movies, DVDs, video games, concert tickets, audio books and other things later.

They also allow new (or old) musicians the opportunity to distribute their music with them. And last but not least, they offer people the opportunity to have their own online music stores. BurnLounge is contracted with the top 4 music marketing labels, which makes everything they have online LEGAL to download.

If you would like more information, please feel free to send me an email and I will do what I can to help you.

My site is http://burnlounge.com/mlbliss and you can also research them at http://corp.burnlounge.com and http://help.burnlounge.com

Depends on how much you have to invest. Bookstores are usually very expensive to open, staff, manage. You can aim smaller with something like note taking services (sell notes to popular classes taken by students - cheap to get, good margin) that is not as labor and money intensive as a store, restaurant, coffee shop, etc. Also consider buying/selling of used items since kids are looking to raise cash and buy things cheap (CDs? )
