I make handcrafted gifts, cards, wedding stationary & favours. I make up personalised gift baskets and a number of other similar things. Have been selling to friends and colleagues, etc... but now want to expand a bit and try it more professionally but really need a name. I thought of trying to incorporate my name or intials but really struggling. I really want something catchy & memorable. |

Invite over about ten of your best friends for a wine tasting party at your house early in the evening and make sure you have a designated driver or two. After everyone has had a glass or two, and start to loosen up tell them you are looking for a name for your handcrafted gifts business.
You’d be surprised at how creative they become. The more they loosen up the more chance there is of something very good coming out of it.
Get several names you like because the challenge will be to find a name that you can register but even more so to find one that is also available as a web site name. The moment you settle on something, do a search at http://www.godaddy.com to see if the name is taken. If you are very lucky and it is available, buy it immediately. It will cost you less than $10 and you’ll own it for at least a year.

How about 'Wedding Bells Stationary'?
I think if you want to target the wedding stationary market, you might have to position yourself as on. I collect paper, but one of the best places for handmade paper in Edinburgh is a wedding stationary. If you need handmade paper, you'll go there, but people who are getting married will go there over a normal paper shop any day.
One check you can do after you've chosen a name is type it into Google with your location name. That will show if there is something you could get confused with. Something too generic like 'love cards' will never point you if people google it, because it's too generic. |

I know what you mean, I have spent several hours figuring out how to call my business too..
What I recommend you is to storm brain with your family/friends and then, interview them all asking them to vote and give you their thoughts...

Actually, you don't have to "incorporate" the name. You just need to go to your county courthouse and file a "DBA" or "Doing Business As" form with the county clerk. Incorporation is a much bigger thing which you won't need to do unless you expand quite a bit.
I'm not sure about the name, though. I know business stuff but I'm not very good at the creative stuff. :-) |
