I am at a loss why your boss isn't getting involved? If you can, I would go above your boss's head and report the incident formally including details of the 'lost expenses reports'. Tell your boss what you intend to do - it may shake his/her backside into actually intervening. Make sure you tell the colleague that you are going to report the incident formally too. This might jolt a memory. Take copies of your cash report and include this with any formal presentation you make (always in writing). Refute any responsibility and say that you will not be forced to pay a penny until they can show you the expenses reports (the missing ones - someone has them) and prove you didn't give the money away. If possible, get a good solicitor and give them copies of all communications regarding this incident - including the incident report you make to the higher members of the company. As its one word against another, its going to come down to conduct from now on. If you act quickly and professionally you will get the upper hand. Also, remind them that you have been a trusted part of the company for x amount of time and no other incidents of this nature have occured before. Do not accuse your colleague of theft. Rather put it down to forgetfulness - perhaps due to stress? (If you can find out if they have any personal issues regarding stress then all to the good). This will allow your colleague a back out clause if they choose to admit a 'mistake'. It never pays to slag off colleagues so be as diplomatic as possible. Good luck. |

Dear Vicky
A very similar thing once happened to me. I do not have a job. And the sum only included £20 and the only people involved were my parents.
However there are some fundamental lessons that I learnt. Before I go into that ...
If you have entered that into your cash report. There is a more serious level involved here too. If all your expenses' receipts for that month have gone missing and whilst you were on holiday. If the police were involved then I think this matter would be resolved faster than you can imagine.
1. Did you see the receipts before you went on holiday ? Did anyone else ?
2. Was it someone else who noticed they had gone missing when you were on holiday ?
3. Do you have any private receipts for your holiday expenses ?
If the answers to these questions are yes, then go to your bosses superior. They are obviously not wanting to get involved because they are about to get into trouble for what happened. The blame directed at you is merely detracted from them. Go to your boss's boss and tell them what is happening. Let's not forget who has fraudulantly stolen this money.
The person who has "lost" the months receipts for this period is the one with the motive; the person who stole the money.
4. Did anyone else witness you give your collegue this money ?
No one (except possibly the law) has right or access to your deposit accounts unless you give it to them. If they claim that the law has given them a warrant you will have been informed by the law - a court etc..
Go to the police. The law can prove you innocent as well as guilty. If your bosses threaten you with the law - "give us access to your bank accounts and then we will not involve the law" - chose the law. If you are not guilty you should be cleared.
What about motive ?
5. Did this collegue know that you were going on holiday ? Did they know how long you were away ? Did they know your routine and proceedure with the company float ? Could they have had access to the receipts that have gone missing ?
If none of your bosses will support you, consider this
a. How long have you done this job ? Has money ever gone missing whilst you have done this job before ? If so was it found ?
b. Have you ever done this sort of job before with no problems ? If not and if you have but had problems, did the collegue who took the £700 know about this ?
Go to the police - if there are any left anywhere.
You, or if you find a suitable police inspector and can get a warrant, you need to know about your collegues financial circumstances.
Last consideration.
Given the sum of money involved -
1. Do you want to continue to work in a sewerage pit like this ? You followed the rules, you did not take the receipts, why are they threatening to take money out of your accounts ?
2. Once a theif always a theif - who ever took this £700 will do so again. Even if they have sacked you and it happens again they will not reemploy you.
3. How was your boss involved - I can't help but wonder about his role in all of this ?
If the police really exist they would be interested.
4. If you are sacked there is nothing to stop the company lying through their teeth to prevent you from finding work ever again. They do this to give their unreasonable arguments credibility.
In my day the law counted for something - to uphold the rights of women (when they were weak and feeble), children (you can take a good thing too far), the sick and the poor. Now we appear to simply uphold the rights of aliens, (literally people from a foreign land; even British aliens). In the name of multi culture they are entitled to their cultures (mostly ones of grab it and run mentalities) and ours is being destroyed to make way for theirs.
It will end - when there is nothing left of Great Britain and these desert cultures can find nothing left to canabalise. They came to this lush and pleasant land for our education, housing, health, etc. It is now all on the verge of breaking point.
This Vicky is the culture you are fighting. The culture of sewer rats. All claiming to be victims and manipulating the system for their own immediate ends. They have no consideration for the future - not even their own. They take what they have got and run.
Most policeman can't be bothered to do their jobs because they don't like writing reports. You can see the consequence for yourself. You only get a job nowerdays if you are stupid or wicked. You need to lie for your boss they are not looking for honest people, or be too silly to see what is going on. Your bosses purpose is certainly not yours privately or socially.
There are no lush hills anymore; desert races prefer all night discos, entertainment centres, moscues and temples. Housing estates, shopping centres, etc. If there are any gleaming spires anymore they are now all night wine clubs. No communities remain. The glory of God is now boring, to our youth all educated in this multi cultural desert.
With my parents and the £20 I would apear not to have paid my father. He was slightly drunk at the time I paid him and it was witnessed, but my brother chose not to say anything. I paid it again in front of the whole family to my mother. My mother claiming that she no longer wanted it. There was more than my £20 at stake. My honour was being questioned.
One option is to pay the massive £700 yourself - DO NOT ALLOW THEM ACCESS TO YOUR ACCOUNTS - I can tell immediately that your employers are dishonest. Safe guard yourself, what ever they say or promise. No intelligent person signs contracts with the devil. They all become croppers ! Paying this money to them I feel is not going to secure your job. If you are proved right they will be by implication wrong and desert cultures where it is every man for himself with no regard for honour or decency does not like to be held accountable. Responsibility is only awarded by the powerful to the vulnerable when they do not want to be held accountable. These cultures have neither the patience nor the social graces to consider responsibility as to prevent such events from ever occurring, or to deal with the crisis that has arrisen. These bosses in a crisses are simply involve in allocating blame elsewhere.
If you can not find a Jack Frost or a Hercule Poirot then the only thing left is to run.
Vicky get out now and take your money with you (change your accounts). Unless a court rules otherwise it is your money.
Sewer rats are clever. London Borough Council have been trying to get rid of them ever since the London sewers were built. They still have not succeeded. Since the rats have been established they are spreading.
If you leave before you are sacked then you stand a chance - (you may have to change your name and move) - you may find another job. Work for yourself. Be very warry of other people. Blood should be thicker than water - turn to your family.
I may just sound like a mad woman and no advice goes heeded - even I knew better than everyone else untill it happened to me. Dear Vicky you are not the first and you will not be the last. I am sorry. God and you know you are innocent, do not be intimidated.
Conclusion - change your account details, before you leave go to the police with the angle that your boss is fraudulantly trying to gain access to your bank accounts. Go with witnesses - strong characters who will not disappear saying they do not wish to get involved. Your father ? Start looking for work elsewhere and when you find a job leave this one as soon as possible. Look for witnesses and guaranters elsewhere.
Good luck, if you are innocent. It sounds to me as if you are. It sounds to me that you are not accountable and it sounds to me that the only people here acting illegally let alone immorally are your bosses and this collegue.
Stand up for yourself. |

well a lesson for you, but i know you dont want to hear that. If he gets away with it he will rear his ugly head again, because greed will get the better of him.

It sounds like someone is trying to rip you off. If you can show you recorded it in cash report at the time don't know why your boss isn't more sympathetic. If they are insisting they will take from your deposit tell them you will make a county court claim to recover it. I know you have no proof but neither have they. |

Bit confused about this.
Surely you didn't pay £700 in cash?
If it was a cheque then it should be possible to trace it.
If it was cash - then without a receipt that's going to be tricky. The main option would seem to be to call his bluff and let him try taking you to court.
What do you mean the money will be 'taken out of my desposit'? |

Have you got any large male brothers, friends ect who could have a word with him simply to point out the mistke he's made. If this is not for you take him to small claims court. |

If you paid them cash then you may have a problem, but the fact you put it in a ledger as cash at least gives a time frame to work from.
If this person is innocent he won't have any problem showing you his bank book, maybe he deposited it?
Do you have any witnesses that you paid him, and what was the money in repayment for?
Didn't he have to sign for it? |

I don't understand why you paid him anything without a receipt? I honestly don't know how you can prove it now - it boils down to one of those cases - his word against yours, unfortunately as you haven't got a receipt from him and the money was your responsibility I think you have the onus of care. Please, please learn from this and always cover your back. |

Get him into a secret discussion about it. Say something like 'You know damned well I paid you that money and now I am going to get into trouble for it'. He will do one of two things...gloat about it or deny it.
If he gloats, fantastic...because you will be recording him won't you?
Set it up before you even go into the room. A community kitchen is a good one. Wait until he goes in there and then follow him. Close the door so that he does not suspect you are trying to trap him and pretend to be really angry.
You get ONE shot. Do not mess it up.
If he denies it, then you have to put your divviness down to experience and either resign or pay the money.
But I'd take it out on this bas*ards' car on my way out if I had to take this option! |

Can you have a quiet word with him and try to get through to his better side? Go for the sympathy vote, saying you cannot afford to lose that sort of money etc.
If that doesn't work, say that you may have to resort to more drastic measures but don't let on what they are.
I apolgise on behalf of the unsympathetic answerers above!
Good Luck |

Did anyone else see this transaction? Did you discuss it with anyone else in the workplace at the time? If not, then sorry, but it is going to be his word against yours. Crap I know but we live and learn. Hope it works out somehow for you and remember never to put yourself in that position again. Best of luck. |

Personally I would involve the police. I feel very sorry for you, you obviously have a trusting personality but I am afraid there are some real pieces of work out there. Your boss seems to be pathetic but I wish you all the luck in the world. |

They can not take the money from you without proof that you took it. It seems to me that who ever was covering you must me working hand in hand with the guy who gave the money to. Tell the boss that you can not be held resposible for the money if the receipts went missing whilst you where on holiday and as far as you are concerned it is a criminal matter and that as such YOU will be bringing the police in to investigate. Ensure people hear about it and watch the rats run. By the way do bring the police in. |

You must have the cash report. This is serious because it sounds like something that could happen again. Go to your boss, explain the situation, and if he refuses to give you the cash report, then give him a letter of resignation. |

Since you didn't go through the proper channels you just learned an expensive lesson. Next time, you will ask for permission from your boss which I know you'll get in writing to give anybody money from the company float. You will get a signed receipt from that colleague showing how much they got, the date and when they will pay it back. Then you will give a copy to Payroll, and keep one in their personnel file, and even somewhere that it won't disappear. Get the picture? It is your fault, pay up! |
