shipwreck | What degree would you need to become a business consultant? |
my law teacher used to be a business consultant working for siemens, i dont know the specifics of the job she had but she attained a law degree from UCE, but i would have thought a business consultant would need a business related degree? |

You don't necessarily need and degree at all. It's a matter of experience, expertise, and credibility. Whatever degree you may have from college is only about supporting those elements.
The most import thing you need is to be an expert in whatever it is you are consulting about. An MBA is probably the most common degree for consultants, but there are an awful lot of idiots with MBAs. |

First off a degree of experience and credibility.
The rest depends on what field of consulting you are thinking of doing. |

Not necessarily, it depends on type of consulting. I am a management consultant and I have an engineering degree which has nothing to do with companies I work with. I work with consultants who have anything from art and law degrees to engineering and science degrees. Only, time they require specific degree is when project scope requires special skills. |

Many consultants have an MBA. A master's degree in taxation is also extremeny helpful.
There's nothing wrong with a law degree, although she would have to have experience in business related matters.
If your consultants want help in IT, then a degree in computer science would be a good thing to have.
Business consoluting is like medicine. It covers A LOT!
Of course, the king of degrees is a degree in accounting.

MBA would be the best bet but I do know of somebody who did separate corporate law and accountacy degrees and can name his price. |

If you look at the big consultancy companies like Arthur Andersen, for instance, they recruit graduates of all kinds of disciplines. They're more interested in the graduate's personal skills and ability to learn about business than in the actual degree. Having said that, if you want to be a business consultant working for yourself or a small company it might look better on your CV if you can say you have a business, finance or economics degree. |
