What degrees do I need to start my own restaunant?

Bill
None, you just need money

The best education you can get it to manage someone else's restaurant then start your own.

Formal education will get in the way

It depends on the state regulations-- a degree in hospitality management would be helpful in the long run. but if you plan just to have a small business then just get the permits from your state. That is if you already know how to cook or know someone that is going to be the chef in your restaurant but if you don't know how to cook then the first step is culinary school. i have a friend that went to CHIC in chicago they have a really neat program .

mrshunter_2002
at least a business degree

One in Hospitality Management or Business would be perfect.

No degrees needed to start your own business. You may like to consider having a amazing cook if you are not the kitchen type.

None. Work experience is much more important than a degree.

If you have a degree, it could make life easier. Any of the following would help:
Accounting, marketing, hotel & restaurant management.

A good business plan and enough cash are also more important than the degree.

Diamond in the Rough
Culinary Arts would be a start

What you need is:

A good location

A good chef

A good set of receipts

A good bit of money

A good bit of common sense

Now if you have a good bit of common sense, then you take your money and find a better investment. I don't know the exact numbers but it is like 8 out of 10 new restaurants fail

You don't need certain degrees, no need money, but a degree in Business or Hospitality/Restaurant management would be helpful.

Get a degree in Business Management!

lordsithscott
none at all

Roman I
you don't need any degrees at all. You need a lot of money that you are very prepared to lose. Restaurants are the WORST business to be in. Even successful restaurants will close after a few years.... other than that an accounting or business degree is helpful, so that youc an keep track of how mucha nd how fast youa r elosing your money. Best of luck though !

Scadle
Well, regardless of if you THINK you need it or not I would shoot for an English degree at this point.

Try Johnson and Whales in Road Island, they have a culinary business managent degree there and its an ive league school of the culinary world.

tri girl
none, but experience helps. If you don't have that, hire a manager that does.

It really depends on what side of the business you want to be on. If you are interested in the food side go to culinary school and get your experience that way. You will find out a lot about the biz through internships etc. If you are more interested in the business side of owning a restaurant then get a business degree with a focus on management. A business degree will help you find out how to raise capital because you will need for a restaurant unless you are loaded. It will also help you with the more administrative end of it while the culinary side gives you the creative side.
Good Luck
