Hello:
I would suggest you go to college, even if it is a community college program. You do not need to go to college to start a business, but a degree, in my opinion, make sit easier to get financing when and if you decide on a new business venture that requires loans/investments. There are many colleges that offer a degree in small business and/or Entrepreneurship. My local community college also has a service for students that helps them with advice and resources for starting a small business, including a com,petition for a small grant to the business idea with the best business plan.

Study what ever you want. It doesn't matter, although some sort of business or finance degree would help. Also, I would argue that to some extent it doesn't matter. Although the education recieved at a university level is worth it. |

I would go to college b/c you will learn more than just how to run a business but how to deal with people and the many situations they can put you in. I would get a business degree in Managment or Marketing. |

College is good but experience is better. It's the whole school smart vs. street smart debate. An alternative to school would be to start at a bookstore, grab some business magazines and entreprenuer books. You can also try business seminars where they give you a crash course in how to start a business but beware of the cons and those who bring you in just to sell you more stuff. Buying more stuff at seminars isn't always a bad thing. Just know the difference between what's useful information and whats not useful. |

You should study business in college. Yes, you don't have to but it's always a good idea. Economics is good as well. I'd highly recommend college to everyone, regardless of wether it's required in your field. It's something that can never be taken away from you, even if your business does not succeed. You never know what road life will take you down. My husband was a welder for years until he became significantly disabled. It was only his education that saved him from lack of promise and a future with nothing to look forward to but disability payments. He makes a good salary now and will never be forced to use physical ability to makea living. Education will never hurt you. Pursuit it now and you'll live a much richer life for it. |

Two websites I would suggest you go to. The first is sba.gov and the second is entrepreneur.com. Everything you need to know to start your own business will be on these two sites. Best of all, the information is free. If you decide to start your own business, look in your phone book to see if there is a local SCORE organization nearby. They are retired business executives that make themselves available for free to tutor people just starting out in business. Good luck. |
