What does it take to own a restaurant?
In the future I would like to own a restaurant and name it after my mother. I'm trying to make a decision on wether I should go on to college and get a degree in journalism or should I go on into Cullinary School and start to open a restaurant. Do I have to be a chef to open a restuarant?
What does it take to Open a restuarant?

I'll take any advice!

It takes money, a good spot that was either previously a restaurant or a spot that would be suitable to build a restaurant (which takes a lot more money). You would need to obtain, an occupational license, a tax id number, a beer and wine or full liquor license, insurance and worker's comp insurance, a staff, food and supplies vendors... you need to get all kinds of inspections before you open such as a fire inspection, full restaurant inspection to make sure you are up to code on how you store your food, the temperature of the food, the cleanliness of the place, etc...you also need to do some advertising and marketing to get your name out there...
You don't have to be a chef, but it sure does help...it would save you some money on having to pay someone to cook...and most importantly...you need time and patience...it's not an easy business. It requires long hours and having to keep control of paying all your bills and taxes and payroll and vendors. You also have to deal with people not showing up to work and have to have quality control over the food and the appearnce of the place...overall, it has to be something you really love to do or else it can be very expensive and overwhelming. Good luck in whatever you decide!

You'd probably need a degree in Business Management, and some experience in Accounting, as you'll have to do your own book keeping for the first few months until you get your own accountant. Also there are probably documents and licenses to apply for, it is also a good idea to have some experience in the catering industry aswell :)

Yes money is helpfull, but to secure a loan, the banks want to see some experience and a heafty down payment. Going to Cullinary school is fine but getting a degree in Hotel or Food service Management is also helpfull. Other degrees that may help is Art, Marketing, Business Management, and Hospitality.

The question here is what makes a restuarant sucessfull?
Five things- Location, Location, Location, ambiance, and service. The quality of food is not that important. Examples? Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock Cafe, Sr Frog.

Ask what you look for when you dine out. Then make that your mission, then learn how to solve problems. Learn how to deal with people. The food service industry is rife with turnover. if you overprice the food, make sure the customer feels like royalty. Know what clientelle you are going after IE, what demographics in your area has expendible income and no time to cook. Have one signature dish, and one signatue dessert.

Have a hook. Make it popular. Popuarity brings repeat customers. No matter how bad the food- McDonalds ring a bell?

To get some experience, look into the type of restaurant you want to have, find job as a waiter, short order cook, set up or prep supervisor, customer service supervisor. Large chains like Friendlys, Fridays, Red Lobster, etc will train you.

I say Culinary school. Journalism is a long shot career like acting or being a trial lawyer. You have to be in the top 5 to 10 percent or you ain't! There is lot of networking that you can do while going through the culinary experience. Friends are forged with other students who know about supply sources from all over the world. Journalism is just oversupplied.

you need a lot of money and be prepared to lose all the money because most restaurants dont last very long. You dont need to be chef to own a restaurant, you could always hire one but this will make your costs higher.

Money , then some more money, and finnally a little more money.

And enough money to last you 3 years without making any profit.

You don't have to be a chef to own a restaurant, you pay a chef. As far as what you need: lots of capital (i.e. funds to buy/rent building, funds to buy supplies and necessary licenses, and funds to pay employees) These days it is hard to keep a restaurant alive, so have a lot of reserve cash for slow times.

An interesting building....

You have to know the business inside and out. Becoming a chef doesn't guarantee that you'll be a successful restaurateur.

You'll need seed money (or stellar credit to borrow from a bank), and a top-notch marketing plan to attract business. You need to have a great product, at a competitive price.

You'll also need to fill a void in whatever community in which you want to open. Good luck.
