Then in that case you are technically a crook, because you accepted the rules of ebay when you posted the product to sell.
This is like if you go into a retail store & pick out products you want, and pay the money at the cash register, then they won't let you have what you bought & paid for. What do you do? If you have the receipt but not the goods, you call the police.
Well someone has probably called the police on you.

Well you can tell them the item is damaged. Tell them you changed your mind. Communication is important and you never know, maybe they don't really want to spend the money. Tell them you listed it for a friend and he/she changed their mind. One time is not going to ruin you. If you are a non-paying bidder and get three non pays your done. Sellers can get away with a lot more. trust me.

People can publicly rate you and describe exactly what you did (thus potentially shortening your eBay career)

By listing something on E-bay to sell, and having someone bid on that item and you allow the auction to end with a winning bidder, you have entered into a contract to sell the item to the winning bidder. You can be sued over this. You also can and most likely will not be allowed to list anything on e-bay for sale again. If it sold accept the money and ship the item!

The buyer will send a dispute to Ebay and unless you can come up with a pretty darn plausible excuse you will lose your right to be a seller. Why put an item up for sale and then refuse to sell it? makes no sense.

You get a bad rating...
