jenniestar9 | What is a derit? |
as part of a crane |
|

Bummerang
|
You mean DERRICK.
It is a framework erected over an oil well to allow drill tubes to be raised and lowered, or a simple crane having lifting tackle slung from a boom. |

Is it the bill? No, it might be the wing. Who knows? |

Maybe you are thinking of Derrick crane, a combination of the derrick and the crane, having facility for hoisting and also for swinging the load horizontally? |

Do you mean Derrick? I think you do.
http://dict.die.net/derrick%20crane/
A mast, spar, or tall frame, supported at the top by stays or
guys, with suitable tackle for hoisting heavy weights, as
stones in building.
Derrick crane, a combination of the derrick and the crane,
having facility for hoisting and also for swinging the
load horizontally.

It's called a derreck. A derrick is a lifting device composed of one mast or pole which is hinged freely at the bottom. It is controlled by (usually 4) lines powered by some such means as man-hauling or motors, so that the pole can move in all 4 directions. A line runs up it and over its top with a hook on the end, like with a crane. It was commonly used in docks.
The device was named after Thomas Derrick, an English executioner from the Elizabethan era because of its resemblance of the frame from which a hangman's noose hangs. |
