What is a good business for a 12yr old Boy to start or run?
Ok, per the suggestion of an awesome fellow Yahoo answerer, I want to go ahead and let my son start a business this upcoming year. He did try a dog walking business for about 5 minutes last year but our area doesn't allow for it right now. Any ideas/suggestion on what he could do?

Service? Product?

Don't hold back if it's a good idea. The only catch is that we are basically broke so it would have to be something that doesn't cost more than flyers and bizz cards and minimal supplies if any to start.

He can use the computer and we almost every darn program in the universe - if that would help a suggestion.

AND - We live in an area where it snows and is about 20 degrees during the winter and over hot during the summer ( 100) so keep tht in mind. Also, the don't let kids do the paper route here for some reason so he can't do that.

Thanks!!

My friend's 12 year old neighbor washes people's cars as well as shovels their snow and picks the weeds, waters the plants that the sprinklers don't reach, and little jobs like that.

He does pretty well for himself. The business cards he uses were free ones online that he only paid the shipping for.

Basically, anything property-oriented, hot or not. He could start early in the morning in the summers, and just equip him with a waterjug and make sure he takes breaks as needed, and knocks off between 10am-2pm, when the sun is at its peak.

I wouldn't allow him to do a paper route, anyway, because of the door-to-door nature and collecting the money. I would allow him in his own neighborhood to do business with people you know personally.

1) Think large for the long term, but think small in the beginning. Start your business by contacting people that you know ( friends, family, neighbors etc. ). Let these people know that you are in business, and explain to them what a convenient service you provide.

(2) Network your business as a fund-raiser. Contact local schools, churches, civic groups etc. who want to raise money for their organization and keep a percentage of sales as your profit.

(3) Take advantage of any gift giving occasion ( holidays, birthdays, engagements, graduations, etc.) Keep a log of all special occasions for your customers.

(4) Contact local business who having waiting areas (family doctor, pediatrician, dentist, beautician, mechanics etc.) This is an excellent opportunity for you to offer your service at little or no additional cost to the customer.

(5) Ask existing customers for referrals. Most businesses get their start this way. For example: Your beautician built his or her client base from referrals of existing customers. Word of mouth is the most powerful form of advertisement.

(6) Contact your local Chamber of Commerce to get a listing of businesses ( and their address / Phone Number) in your area. Write a letter of introduction, or use our suggested letter of introduction, to contact them. There may be a small fee to get this list.

(7) Contact large businesses in your area.

(8) Keep updates on new residents in your area. Write a letter to welcome them to the community and tell them about your service. Form a business relationship with a local company that deals with major purchases ( real estate brokers, car salesman ).

(9) Build relationships with your customers. Follow up with existing customers on a regular basis ( every 3 mos. ) . And there are NO problems. Hint: Customers follow up is crucial to your business. If you do not follow up, your credibility can be destroyed. If you only call your customers once a year (when it is time to renew ), they will be less likely to renew through you if there have been problems and you were not available to handle them throughout the year.

I guess the best place to start would be to take inventory of his interests and skills. If dogwalking is out but he loves dogs, maybe pet-sitting? Or if he is really good on the computer, typing, or making visually pleasing fliers or whatever, maybe he could do something like that. Start a typing business; charge per page or something. Or maybe ask businesses around town if they would like him to design cards or fliers for them.

If you get a lot of snow in the winter, there's the possibility of shoveling snow. He could be an all-around handyman. Shovel snow in the winter, rake leaves, mow lawns, things like that in the summer and fall. That's a good one because it leaves you with options all year.

If he's musical at all, he could compose jingles and things for local businesses, but that might be a stretch. It depends on if you have a music program on your computer and if any businesses nearby WANT a jingle and/or have the means to actually use it.

If he likes to cook or bake, he could do little bake sales. I think you probably need a license to set up a stand somewhere, but they usually aren't too expensive, so that's an option.

I guess, just start off by figuring out what he likes to do, what he's good at, and what you guys can afford, and then go from there. I've got a book of money-making ideas for kids, so if you'd like any other ideas, let me know. These are just the ones I came up with off the top of my head. Good luck to him!

Mow the lawn, sell lemonade, babysit, car wash, dog wash. Those are some that I would think a 12 year old could do.

He could try selling personalised badges. People can create their own designs and he could make them using a badge it machine. The machine itself comes for around £20.00 and refills for the machine aren't too expensive.

Otherwise, he could try selling homemade smoothies, or hot drinks in the winter.

I honestly don't think any respectable business can be run by a 12yr old unless he is very very mature and well educated in the art of social skills and business. Sure he can shovel snow, maintain lawns, wash cars, or run a lemonade stand but that's about it. I would say though that your best bet for a business is for lawn maintenance. Water grass, rake leaves, clean the exterior, just simple stuff like that could bring in good money, and who knows maybe you could start house sitting or looking after pets on neighbor's vacations. I brought in $400 one summer doing that when I was younger. Good luck!

What about a paper round ?

During winter.
shovel snow.

During Summer/spring/fall/w/e.
Mow lawns.

When my brother was 13 he mowed lawns and made a buisness out of it, and he made alot of money.

chrisncisme
I would suggest him to start small... snow shoveling for busy or elderly neighbors within the neighborhood. During the spring/ summer how about mowing lawns? Provided he uses THEIR equipment and THEIR gasoline. That way his customers are only paying for his labor. Also, odd cleaning jobs are a definite possibility. If you have a local newspaper, I would suggest throwing an ad in there, provided that cost isn't a great amount. If not, just spread by "word-of-mouth" that his is a hard worker and interested in earning some extra cash doing small, odd jobs.

Shoveling snow is obvious but in the summer watering plants cutting grass and washing cars. Try buying something for 1c and selling it for 2 and then buying something else for 2c and selling it for 4c. Its worked for some millionaires.
