depend what is needed. I saw a program on the TV the other day where someone had just opened a colonic irrigagtion shop so find your niche and fit into it.
Personally it would have to be either a little Tea Room type place, upmarket Cafe really, then you can close it around 6pm and have evenings to yourself. or a sex-aids shop, the mark up on that sort of stuff is amazing. |

You basically take pics of the Items & post them for the clients who aren't computer savvy & dont know how to use EBAY & are afraid to even try -trust me there are alot of them -LOL
You set it up for the client for a fee & I think you get a percent once it is sold

If I was considering opening a shop I would carry out some market research first:
Find out what type of shops are already in the area;
Ask a cross section of the towns folks what shop they would like to see. Information can be gathered by questionnaire;
And find out the rates of the shop premises, often these can be prohibitive;.
I would also consider a franchise as an option;.
Myself I always fancied opening a wee coffee shop, nothing fancy, something cosy and inviting; or in your case modern and funky.
Good luck to you and remember if you are between 18-25 years old, (or 30 if you have a disability), you can get free business advice from the Princes Trust. Contact your local enterprise trust they will have contact details etc. |

A business-book I once read gave a couple of good tips :-
1. Stick to mainstream popular products if you want lots of customers. Don't start a business based on some clever 'niche-product' that not a lot of people want, competitors could easily copy and could become unfashionable. Take a low risk approach. Do you really want your livelihood to disappear overnight? Take a look on eBay or ask on Yahoo Answers for what things are popular.
2. In order to make a profit out of selling mainstream products, you need to know that 'You make money when you buy, not when you sell'. In other words, your profit is the difference between the buying and selling price. Due to competition, your selling price is not going to be a lot different to anyone else's. However, you can increase profits by putting lots of effort into finding goods to sell at the lowest possible price. Be prepared to travel long distances to buy your products, consider importing products straight from china, look for end-of-line clear-outs by wholesalers, goods sold at auction, etc. Also, learn all the techniques of haggling to get the best price.

Few answers touch on the financial aspect of running a successful shop. Try using the Banks money as well as yours. It is referred to as gearing. It gives a good idea a lot more oomph! |
