It is great that you realize there will be an investment. Starting any legit, long sustaining business requires this. It's great though that we don't have to rent a building, hire employees, attorneys, have liability insurance.... etc...
You only need basic equipment to start: a phone and computer, transportation is helpful since you may want to promote your business off line also depending on what it is you do. You shouldn't need much storage because you don't want to get into a business where you have to carry unnecessary inventory. If you make flyers or business cards, you may need a small area to store them.
Product (consumable) driven businesses are really the best, as everyone needs customers and if you have a product that someone only needs once, you will not have that repeat business and will find yourself constantly having to seek out new customers.
However, the best biz for one is not necessarily the best for another. I wrote a blog (link in 2nd paragraph of my profile here.) on advice for working from home. In that blog it gives you tips on what to watch out for, how to search out any company you might be interested in, etc... and other things that most people won't tell you, they just want to get you in their 'deal'.
I'd be glad to help you further if you like but can't make recommendations here or put links in answers as it is against Answers polices... I know many do, but it is considered spamming.
Some things to look at when you go to someone's site is: Is there contact information besides a fill in the form email request. Do they have their comp plan and polices and procedures posted or do yu have to sign up first? Is there sufficient information on the front page to let you know what it is? Do you have to pay for information or a cd to find out more?

I love that you know the right questions to ask. Although there are alot of scams there are also those few opportunities that are legit. Really the only equipment I need is my computer. I make plenty of money just using the Internet from home.
I didn't invest any money to begin with, but now i spend some of my earnings on other ventures etc. So it is a matter of what interests you. I currently am involved with a greeting card company that lets you design your own card. Then they print it, stuff it, and mail it for you. So easy and loads of fun.

Partially this depends on what you want to do and what products you're passionate about, and what interests you. Those are the first things you really should find out about yourself.
I can tell you why I do what I do:
I am a Managing Regional Director with a company called For Your Pleasure. We do romance home parties. I got into this business because these products sell! People are very excited about these products and being able to see them all in a homebased party setting. I do not need to carry inventory so there is no storage issues. My commission is 50%. I work MAYBE 15 hours a week and that includes 2 - 3 parties and working with my team that is currently at 80 women.
Doing all this, I make more than I did working 50 hours a week as an Executive Assistant outside the home.
But it takes commitment and you must never give up. You must work to get your name out there, and business does come to you. I have a very large, very loyal customer base and an excellent team of salespeople.

It really depends on what you want to do! To succeed at home you must enjoy what you are doing! I have been working at home as an appointment setter for the last five years. This is a real opportunity to make money from home! I've had a lot of problems with my vocal chords lately, and will eventually need surgery (I also sing). I have spent a lot of time over the last few months trying to find something else that I could do from home...and then I realized that there is a lot of BS and fluff out there!!
Basically what I have done is created a short report explaining the background of this business, how to do it, the laws and regulations, and your basic home office setup. I have searched extensively for companies who hire employees to set appointments from home. There are several I have put into the database….and yes these are legitimate companies who want people to work from home setting appointments. Just in case you don't find something there, I have also included a database of job boards and other job search engines. If you want to start your own appointment setting business, I have also included information on how to freelance and get started!
I certainly do not intend to mislead you. Appointment Setting is a legitimate job that you can do from home and I have done all of the legwork for you! I struggled with the right price for this information, and to tell you the truth it has taken me over 500 hours to put together! I started offering this report a few weeks ago for $40.00, but I did not include the extensive database of companies currently hiring. I still had a great response....now I have improved it and I have decided to offer it for less than the original price! How did I come to this amount? Well, if you start working immediately, even a below average appointment setter will schedule 1 appointment an hour. Most companies pay $10-$20 per appointment. The idea is to have you recoup the investment within 1 hour…yes this is possible!
