my company pays a third party to randomly select our employees for drug testing every quarter. each quarter you give them an updated list of employees and they send you a list of who to test. Then as the employer or tester you simply say that you hire an independent third party to make your selections. There is no way they can say you are picking on any one person or group. |

I know this is a bit extreme, but in the military, everybody has to drug test on the "random" day selected, otherwise they do not get paid for that day. There's a whole process in place for drug testing to include having selected individual's verifiy your social security number and also watch you do your thing in the cup to insure that it is indeed, your urine specimen. I just do not know if the way the military does it, is legal in Corporate America. Again,in the military, no one gets to go home until everyone that showed up for work that day is drug tested. By doing it this way, its fair and no one person is singled out and EVERYONE participates. It's a long drawn out process, but it works! Have plenty of water handy and each person shows-up at the designated rest-rooms, signs-in, initial's their cup when finished. The cup is taped shut and placed in a box. When all have finished, the box is shipped-off to the drug testing lab. All of the urine samples have each persons name and Social on-it, and the individual has verified that the urine in the sealed container is their's. So when it comes back positive for a drug, there are no issues as to: Oh, that was not my urine, etc. |

The key to successful drug testing is to be completely random. I have found that Monday mornings will give you a more accurate reading (post-weekend). Don't pursue a specific group. If people feel like they are being targeted you will only cause friction and hostility in the workplace. Be sure to switch things up; if you send female on Monday the first week send a male on Thursday the next week. Don't get into a pattern that people can catch; be spontaneous. Also be discreet you don't want to risk a law suit for defamation. Respect employees' right to privacy. |

I think your best bet would be after or before big holidays.. 4th July, New years eve, St Patricks day, getting my drift.. After a office accident and vaction. Do it out of random by selecting a number for each employee when they get hired odds evens primes and divisables. |
