alkalinetrio1103 | What is the best way to get more business? |
I Just started my own business, its a service business going to people houses. I have tried the newspaper but haven't had any lucky and I don't want to keep doing it because its very expensive. Is there any other way to get your name out there. I don't mind paying as long as i get results. |

Try networking a little. Find out if there's a chamber of commerce or similar local business organization you can join. Put up business cards or fliers on any public noticeboards. A website needn't be expensive nor complicated - even one page with your basic information and contact details is better than nothing. A blog's ideal if you're not very technically minded.
Submit your business to both online and print business directories that cover your area. Tell everyone and their granny what you do and you're looking for work. Prepare an elevator speech for that very purpose (ie one that describes your business in a few sentences, like you'd use if you were chatting to someone in an elevator that asked what you did for a living.)
Ask for feedback from trusted friends on the ads you already placed. Were they too long? Too short? Too complicated? Is essential information missing like contact info? Were you advertising in the wrong place? You get the idea. Analyze them best you can and you might find how to be more successful next campaign.
Join forums and communities that are related to your business. Get to know more people online that work in the same area. It's just as important to build a reputation online as it is offline. Be helpful, share your knowledge and build that trust.
Contact your local paper and see if they'd be interested in doing a feature on your new business venture. Offer them something in return such as a prize for a competition for the readers. If say you're running a house cleaning business, you could donate a day or week's worth to the lucky winner. Give them a reason to say yes.
That's about the best I can do without some more details on the type of business you're offering and your target audience. That makes a huge difference in what your options are. Good luck! |

One way is to get referrals from your existing customers offer them some discount or something if they refer a friend. |

If you do your service to people you already know like friends, they can suggest you to other friends and you can network through word-of-mouth. Its the best way to do it, however if someone has a bad experience with you once it could have a MAJOR impact on others wanting your service.
Good Luck :] |

Hi, the best way and most effective is leaflets but make them look good
Presentation is a must especially when you are just starting out
Always think big, the advertisement you do should look like you are a big professional company even if in reality you may be working from a shed.
So if you are willing to spend a little money, spend it on a professional looking leaflet.
You only get one chance to make a first impression so make it good.
Once you make them go to the post office and tell them the areas you want your business to come from. It does not cost much to distribute. Take a map and highlight areas.
Good luck!!! |

Some of the advice you have is good but too general. Although an 82 year old relative of mine is a computer whizz, she is a rarity. If you are looking to provide a service to older people, for example, you would need to target advertising to anyone who can influence them or in places where they would visit (community centres, doctor's surgery, library etc. and perhaps even social services). If your service is unusual and interesting, a local paper or magazine might profile you and do a write up for free. If they try and sell you advertising tell them you have no budget. I got my products in three national magazines on the basis of uniqueness and a customer offer. You could link up with another organisation to offer your service as a regular add-on to their business or as a special promotion (eg. you cleaned carpets and upholstery - talk to letting agencies and carpet shops, loss adjusters and insurance claims handlers)
There is no 'one size fits all' to this as your business will have it's own USP's (unique selling points) and you must direct your services or products in the right direction. Look at how similar business promote in other areas and above all do not be afraid to make ballsy approaches to anyone who may use or recommend you to lots of other customers. Start at the top and work down, join some local business organisations or clubs and keep talking to anyone who stands still in front of you. Have business cards at the ready to give to anyone you meet. Good luck !

Assuming you just started out... you're a service business performing the service in people's homes... you need to spend your advertising dollars locally.
The internet is nice but it is global. If you are in Tennessee you don't want to spend money advertising to people in California.
Try a group coupon mailer, like Val-Pak, or coupon magazine. Where numerous coupons are mailed out in one package. These usually have great success with local service businesses.

Look into magazine advertisement that pertains to your market. That is what I do for my business and it seems to work well and has been very lucrative. |

Well i have my own business - i deal with contracts - i advertise by word of mouth and create flyers with coloured paper. Also i use my friends as contacts. Maybe You can consider creating some business cards to leave at some homes of potential clients. |
