Create a strategic plan. This document will help you focus on what you're trying to accomplish, who your market is, etc.
A business plan focuses on HOW to get it done.
First, make sure you have a product/service, customers that you can find, an answer to their current challenges, and their willingness to pay for the solution.
If you do, you have the potential for a business. If you don't have a plan, you'll be wasting your precious time and money. |

Yes, talk to an accountant. He'll keep you from making mistakes that can hurt you down the road.
The first thing you need to do(besides deciding what your business is) is to file a name with your state. If it's a small business, you might want to register as an LLC (limited liability corporation) or a Co (Corporation).
This will give you the legal right to practice your business, otherwise it is illegal.
After you have your name registered, you need to file the appropriate tax forms. The accountant should be able to help you there.
You should also hire an attorney. If you don't, you will most likely make a mistake, maybe just a small one, that could cost you a lot of trouble and money in the future.
(this is all assuming you're American) |

Start by talking to family, this affects not only you but your nearest and dearest. Do not discuss this with freinds, loose lips.... People are so indiscrete!
Get advise in Wales contact Business Eye, in England Business Conect, this is a free at point of use service, totally confidential. Ensure your advicer is registered with the IBA. Check their site below for local advisors, but I and they will charge.
But the first thing to do is get a computer where the e and l button work unlike this thing! |

Hi, I own 2 medium sized business'es.. The 1st I opened in 1986 the second in Jan of 07.. Follow these step to sucsess..
1st. Develope a business plan. ( know exactly what your cost
vs income is) Is there
adequate income to
support the business)
2nd. Determine your Customer Base ( This is very important)
3rd. Assess your financial situation ( Are you able to make
a long term commitment)
( Most new bisiness'es
won't see true profits for
3-5 years)
4th. Determine your advertising stratigies ( you have to let
customers know you're
in business)
5th. Go to a tax proffesional and have them , 1st set you up as either a C-Corporation or Limited Liability Corporation.
( This will protect your personal assets in case thing don't go as planned or in the unforutate situtation that someone get hurt and decides to sue you.. They can sue your company but you personally are protected by the corporate umbrella as long as you were not personally responsible. 2nd : apply for your sale tax permit, Tax Id Number, ect.
6th. Go talk to your insurance carrier.. You'll need Workmans Compansation as well as General Liability. (with a little research , you can find out what your average competitor carries ( ie: 1 million in GL) this varries greatly depending on your type of business.
7th. Go Talk to your local Banker ( Convince him/her that your in this for the long hall and have all of your ducks in a row when you meet with him/her.. Outline exactly what your business is , what the financial goals are and how you plan to achieve them. A good presintation with your banker can go a long ways towards the sucess of your new business.)
8th. Make business contacts. ( This is vital !!!! If the other business's in your area will support you, then you're already half way to being sucsessful. Make sure that you let them know that you know how to return the favor. )
My personal befief is that I do Business with those that do business with me. It sometime cost a little more, but the return
is 10 fold.
9th. Work like you've never worked before.. This will probably mean a lot of weekends but , do what you have to do..
Have fun & Good Luck |

1. Research thoroughly your competition. Your business plan will ask what you have that they dont etc etc.
2. Business Plan....do not skip this as it really asks you questions of yourself. Try LLoyds TSB (if youre in UK)they will give you a start up pack with a ready made business plan template all on CD.
Complete it, it took me two weeks but was well worth it, then go see the bank. They are more helpful than you think.
3.Check out your suppliers.
4.Dont rush it !!
Good Luck |

If you're in the UK follow the guide on the Business Link website. It helps you through everything, tells you what, who and when etc, possible funding sources, licences required...its great. You enter your information and the business details and it tailors everything to you.
Give it a go...although I found it a little slow at peak times. |

The first thing you need to do is find out if you have what people want so do a bit of research on that.
Secondly, make sure you have some capital to get you up and running as you need to market your business so people know where you are and who you are and what you have to offer.
Are you planning to work your business from home or do you need some premises?
Don't really have much to go on by what you have said but these are important ones to think about when you want to get yourself up and running.
Good Luck!! |

If you can do basic book keeping you don't need to spend money at the moment, you will need to inform the tax office - If you are currently unemployed do you know that you cane get a business start up grant. |

Yes. The accountant will advise you on the Taxation and Self Employment Law.
The biggest thing you need is the belief in the product or service you are planning and secondly, if you have a business partner, be sure your safeguards are in place, just in case things don't go the way ALL the partners require.
Good Luck, I did exactly the same over 40 years ago, now retired and quite comfortably off! |

They can be costly.
If its going to be small to begin with, just register your company name and then go to the bank to open a bank account and they will give you free advice and help. |
