I would imagine that ther is on average 50% profit on pound shop goods. Which is reasonable considering all the staff and expenses have to come out of it.

About £1 per unit, judging by the quality of its stock.

I have run a pound shop for more than 10 years and the answer to margins depends on your product mix.
If you could stick to selling toys, fancy goods, stationery and household goods then you could make reasonable margins.
I only sell quality goods and there are plenty of items around for about 50p - 55p + vat for these type of items.
Remember that the retailer is only getting 85p out of the £1...the balance goes to the government in VAT,
So if you make 30p you have a 55% mark up which gives a 35% profit.
However I find a key section in our store is the branded toiletry section...this is what keeps our customers returning. This section only yields a 19% profit.
Because we sell so many toiletries this reduces our margins right down to probably 27% at present.
Conditions are tough on the High Street at present and though it looks an easy living I assure you its damn hard work and there are many hidden expenses.Just to have our bins emptied costs £50 per week !
