The most important aspect in starting a new business is having the capital to sustain yourself for what ever time frame you think you will need to generate a profit. It is also important to have a solid business plan so you know where it is you are going and not just shoot from the hip. |

Just like the other answers here...MONEY is most important.
As a rule of thumb, it costs you twice and much and takes you twice as long as you think it will to get a new business started.

There is no such thing. A business is a complicated undertaking that requires a combination of technical skills, people skills, capital, and sheer luck. |

The best answer is "customers". If you know how to drive sales, then everything else is easy. |

I would say Capital. It can be a real show stopper if you don't have it. |

Enough working capital (cash or a secure line of credit) to get started and established.
It also doesn't hurt to know how to spell/type/proofread. |

Motivation !
Followed by money, commitment, people skills, patience, and a willingness to accept that your ideas are not always the best ideas and that you may need to change to stay in business. |

Already some have answered capitol, an idea and motivation. All very good answers but I believe a good business plan can lead to capitol, form and refine your idea and set a road map to success that can be very motivational. Seek on line info, books at the library, or assistance from your local Small Business Administration on writing a good business plan. A bank will want to see it for a loan! Yeah, I gotta go with business plan. |

Understanding the target market, key benefits for your customers.
Also have a look at Porter's five forces. It is worth considering your competitive environment... |

If its a service, which i would recommend more than a product, the most important element is a customer...well, a lot of them. Figure out how to find them, and everything else will come together. good luck |
