What kind of business could I start in a very rural area that would be successful?
I want to open a small business in a very rural area, mining and ranching community of about 1000 people.
Additional Details
The area I am interested in is very remote, Walmart is 150 miles away. The community already has a grocery store and 2 convenience stores, a bar, coffee shop and laundromat.

If you are talking about an offline business, that is a tough one. It is hard to say because we don't know what is already available in the area.

Can you look around and see a gap in the current market. What I mean is, "Is there a problem that needs solved?" To make a success of a business in such a small community, you need to really pick something that people genuinely need, or cheap enough that people would buy the product or service even if they didn't need it because of the great price.

Even though you are in a rural area, you don't have to limit yourself to a business that services your area. With the online potential of the internet, you could build a business about whatever you like from almost anywhere in the world.

If you want to try that avenue, consider first what your favorite things are, hobbies, interests, things you're good at, etc. Build a website about one of those and then monetize your business online. You don't have to sell products if you don't want to. There are other ways of making money from a website.

You can look in my profile at my first website business about chocolate candy, if you like. Also, there are some free ebooks listed that would help you get started if you want to consider this type of thing instead of an offline business.

Either way, I wish you success.

If you limit your customers to people nearby, it will be very difficult to make ends meet. As you have probably noticed, many independent business people actually have several businesses. The man who plows snow, also delivers fire wood and does lawn care and so forth.
The great thing about the Internet is that it instantly make every business a multi national company.

My answer is this find a business that ignites your passion that you could conduct primarily on the Internet.

My books are excellent guides to help you identify what you passions are. The Titles are Money Is My Friend and Wealth without a Job

A bar, or a church. The 2 staples of every small town.

It depends on your interests, really.

A few suggestions are:

Bakery
Convenience store
Coffee shop
Hardware store
Lock shop for keys

Good luck!

I would first look at the needs and problems of the community you are in and then devise a business plan around solving those needs and problems. Take a pad of paper and over the next week write down anything you perceive or have been told is a problem or issue. I know it sounds hokey or even mundane, definitely not flashy, but you will be surprised at what you find. It may be as simple as landscaping, or feed delivery, or recycling services.

Second, look at services that the citizens travel to receive and consider bringing that service to them. For example, a woman just began offering massage where we live...(1600 people) and is doing surprisingly well. Hardly any start up cost and she networked her self into a $40/hour gig...She was making $12.50. I opened up a Pilates studio that did $60K after the second year in a slightly larger town (drive time is an hour)

Finally, take your three best strengths and list the businesses that are in existence now using those strengths. If you are good with numbers, consider bookkeeping services for local businesses. If you are good with people, try offering yourself as a consultant that will only be paid when people purchase from that business, then go around and market that business to your network of friends and contacts or maybe put an ad out or flyer.

If you are good with kids, open up a kids gym/playground for after school when moms/dads are working. Or consider offering Birthday parties for kids. I knew one guy who made money driving Birthday cakes to college kids at there dorms. He marketed to the parents, bought the cakes at Krogers and delivered them with a card.

Hope this helps...good luck.

Oh and while network marketing is a great business to start on a low budget, it is incredibly challenging and takes quite awhile to build...so be wary of anyone telling you otherwise.

well, what to people need there? what do you hear people say they wish they had? are there any hobbies or interests? do people live far from town? maybe a cute little coffee shop, or a diner...somewhere where people can socially gather and have some food. maybe a little convenience store (not a gas station) but kind of quick, little store to get basic supplies. are people into gardening? maybe a garden supply store. do people like to read? maybe a small little bookstore. ... what about an animal grooming shop? maybe you should send out a little survey to people and ask them what would they like to have added in their community. etc... bottom line you have to find the need/want then make it happen.
