A college degree does you no good in my town but if I had the means and certification to start my own business like a computer repair or caterier or wedding planner or something like that. Do you think that would work or is there any other ideas? Thanks. :) Any ideas or opinions are helpful. |

If you dont value the college degrees much and want to start your own business then why even bother of getting a college degree.
For catering or wedding planner you dont need any certifications coz you are working for yourself.
WHy dont you organise events or exhibitions. That makes a lot of money. I am sure you will be happy |

well, you could just start now on your small business idea. just remember you need to have good advertisement and understand it will take at least five years to turn a profit. i would suggest taking a small business management coarse and start up small business coarse. it should be only a year coarse but that will help greatly. also, walk into some little stores in your area and ask how they launched there store.

You don't need a college degree to start your own business. Bill Gates was a college dropout and he did fairly well for himself.
But I do recommend getting a degree if you have the opportunity and the drive. It's not about what you can get with the degree, it's also about an education. |

yes.. you can earn a certificate just by staying at home.. i believe there are websites that can help you in this matter.. a certificated in computer science is an ideal course and also business management... also there are things that needs to be considered in putting up a business.. i think its best to venture into one and find out or make a survey of the business within your location.. also find out what people really go for.. |

Degrees are great, but not necessary to start up your own business. Starting up your own online home-based business where you can earn money and tax write-offs (and not have to fight traffic, do cold calls, demo parties, stuff envelopes etc) is awesome!

I agree that a degree is totally unnecessary but that is up to you. It may be something you just want to have.
Don't think about what the world needs, think about what makes you come alive and then go do that. If you follow your passion, you will find a way to make it earn a living.
When I was looking to find a way to earn an income through business, I just didn't have the means to open anything at the time so I chose to start a home based business, thinking that I would earn enough money from it to open a "real" business. Well, by doing that, I learned more than I ever did in school AND earned more than I ever expected to earn. I "saw" the potential and just ran with it because I knew I had something other people were looking for and I couldn't wait to show it to them!
It became my passion and that's why it worked for me. I will never have a JOB (Just Over Broke) again! |

Great post. The most important part of business is advertising. This makes or breaks a business. Some of the best ways to advertise I've found are:
1. Offline promoting (business cards, flyers, newspaper and other print advertising).
2. Online promoting (buying banner ads, forum posts, email auto replies).
The best method that's worked for me so far is handing out business cards. I don't do this in the usual way.... I buy them in bulk from a place online (they give the cards for free, I just paid shipping and handling...they also give a really nice free business card holder, it looks impressive). They're really high quality. I just put all of the info about my business on the cards, and I hand them out on cars at bus stations, malls, etc. It's worked out really, really well for me, and it's completely inexpensive =)

Please don't start a business based on what you think will be easy or most lucrative or worked best for somebody else. What do you like to do? What are your skills?
If everyone told you that computer repair was the best business, would you consider that if you hate computers and really love to cook, or do hair, or do something more creative?
Also please understand that owning your own business is a lot of hard and you may benefit from getting some on the job experience before opening your own. |
