One has a successful auto detailing business from home, and the other cleans houses and condos and also does fairly well. They can do it on their time on their schedule, and make tons, which is exactly what I need as a student in Hawaii... I just need a little help figuring out what to do! whatever you do you must find or work towards owning your own business, something you love and have a passion for, (only you will know what that is.)
1 : Create a plan of what you want and when you want it..... this will help you keep on track.
2 : become an expert in your chosen field (specialize), most of us spread ourselves to thin and find no time to complete or compete. ( People don't mind paying for the right advice)
3 : Find out who's your main competition and make you service better. ( Always look for a high competitive market " If these lots of competition there must be money to be made")
4 : Always ask for referrals (word of mouth is the best business you can have), Cost nothing and you won't have to resell, because the customer already has the trust of the referrer.
Specialize in one area of you chosen field so that you can build your knowledge

I'm not mechanically inclined when it comes to auto repair. Last year I had an accident with my Nissan Multi and I wasn't sure how to fix them. I tried to search the Internet for tips, but the procedures were way too difficult for my skills. I ended up going to the dealship for my repairs. The dealership tends to charge more than mom and pop repair shops, but they've seen all sorts of situations (car insurance problems, repair warranty issues, etc) and they seem to always find a way to help me. Service business are the easiest and cheapest to start. You will want to take stock of what you are good at, have done in the past and would be willing to do everyday. Once you figure that out, get your equipment (lawn mower or cleaning supplies etc..)
Next, Advertise. when i was in college i pressurewashed houses. I went to the library and printed off a crap load of b/w fliers nothing fancy and went door to door until i started getting leads. This is the key. You have to market all the time and never stop. do it cheap
