Silke | What motivates some rich people to waste all their lives trying to get more money than anybody needs? |
Often ruining their health, family life etc. in the process. |

First ask, is your definition of 'need' necessarily the right one? Next, how do you define a 'waste of a life' and is your definition more valid than anyone else's? Some people's motivation is directly determined by their own definition of these two things.
Another answer might be that the amassing of wealth could have the same attraction as a game or gambling for some. In other words, it might be described as an addiction or something which is done purely for its own sake.
There is an argument which says that people who seek wealth are creating employment for others. It may be that if there were not such people, there would be less employment and therefore more poverty.
Money is not a physical entity. It is a measure of the flow or exchange of something (the word 'currency' is related to 'current'), just as a river is a flow of water. People who have more money also spend more money, which means that more people are employed in receiving it. |

Because we are taught that greed is everything.
Hate the whole ideal myself. Globalisation, Corporate business, reducing staff to base minimums to please the shareholders, outsourcing, the whole shooting match makes my skin crawl.
Why it is not ok to just make a small profit and keep the staff happy is beyond me. Sadly that is the way of the world and very few staff are happy as constantly being bought and sold to next highest bidder, never settling down to be the best you can be .... incredibly annoying and has a way of making you feel just like a chunk of meat, sold to the highest bidder, just to be poked and prodded again.
And btw .... This is not an issue of jealousy, far from it. This is an issue of ethical behaviour towards people, or indeed, the lack of it. |

I have a relative who is very much like this. He's been hugely successful and wealthy and then he's been right back at the bottom of the heap again over and over. He is incredibly insecure because he grew up in a poor family, and was embarassed as a kid that he didn't have the same as everyone else. He now makes up for it by trying to have MORE than anyone else. Its sad but I don't think he'll change now he's in his mid 40's. |

I agree some with lulu. It can serve as some sort of compensation or life path that derives out of feeling low, embarrassed, insecure and powerless. It becomes an addiction based on some of these factors, and much like other addictions result from "hollowness" of life. I also think for some people it is just learned behavior. Their parents were the same way, as well as probably competitive, and then the child never learns anything else. |

It's not so much the money as the power over others that immense amounts of it generates. You can have a vault as big as Scrooge McDuck's full of cash and it won't do you a blessed bit of good until you start spending it.
What turns you on? I mean REALLY turns you on? If you have enough money, you can have anything and to hades with whether it's right or wrong. Want a dozen virgins before breakfast? That can be arranged. Want a dozen of the world's hottest sports cars? Bill Gates can afford 'em. Want your own little country to run? You can do that too. All it takes is money - lots and lots of money.
Of course there's a downside. All you have to do is read the life story of any of a number of rich men gone bonkers, like Howard Huges. His last years were, by accounts, absolutely wierd as well as miserable. BUT: human nature dictates that we don't trouble ourselves about the downside as we're climbing that ladder towards ultimate wealth. We just don't wanna hear it! Nature also dictates that most of us isolate ourselves deliberately from the cries of the less fortunate whom we trample on our way to riches. Survival of the fittest, we tell ourselves and anyone impertinent enough to wonder at our greed.
And hey: if my relentless pursuit of wealth drives my wife out of my life, there's always a roomful of the most beautiful women in the world willing to lay out in the street for me and my money, so after a few seconds of regret over the departure of wifey - hmmm, c'mere, beautiful, I feel the urge to - well, you get the picture!
Freakin' ugly, isn't it? |

it's an addiction.

it ruins people lives but they can't help themselves. |

For some of them, money is like points in a game -- it's a way of keeping score, and they enjoy the game. For some, money is tied to self-worth. |

Insecurity, there can never be enough money if you feel insecure.
Many people who have amassed huge amounts of money, lose it all before they die.
If a person manages well on a small income, and then become rich, they are likely to be more content, and thus more secure.
However, many people are earning a lot of money doing a job they love, they are not going to stop doing that job in case they get too much money. I am thinking here of entertainers, but I can also think of entertainers who have lost a fortune.
Many people think a lot of money wouldn't change them, but money is meant to change things. I think if I had a lot of money, I would still go to jumble sales, because I love going to them. |

Which ones are you talking about? Can you make a list or a you making general statement based on your prejudice produced by your lack of money. My guess is you don't know any rich people. Many are great philanthropist and take great joy in their work. They simply love what they do. It becomes not as much about making money as it does pursuing your passion. I may never be rich myself, but I'm not going to be jealous because someone else is. |
