Businesses where you are merely buying goods from a cash & carry and selling on have a relatively poor profit margin.
Whereas a business where you produce the end product from raw materials ie a food outlet are the most profitable, albeit they require skill to prepare the food, and this is what the customer is paying for. |

Take a careful look around the town where you live in Devon. Groceries may not be a very priority for a lot of folk. I'm thinking in particular that a lot of folk down your way will probably own land and be growing food on it. Whereas my back garden is 120 long from house to back fence, the average where you live might be twice that long. Get in a couple of rows of strawberries, some spuds and greens and presto, no more shopping for groceries. Only if there's a total crop failure.
Do some market research. Actually take out a clipboard and ask people in the street[s] what they want most from shopping.
You might consider opening a cut-price One Pound shop. If there's none where you live, see if that works.
PS Don't know about Dubbin, but yer in London, the shops that make the most are the corner shops with a lottery ticket machine. That alone is worth about £30,000 a year.
Get one.

Tell you what does make money, Ye Clotted Cream by post. Can't never get none here in London. Very occasionally some enterprizing sod drives up with a small van load, so it's a case of black market prices, that's if you can find any. About as rare as Spam in 1943 if you ask me.
Good luck. |
