Michael M has this one nailed. You tell them that everything is going exactly as planned. I take it from the dread that it is not however, in that case if you want to be truthful, you can simply say it is more challenging than you expected but you are still dedicated to coming out on top. |

If your business is doing great, then you should tell everyone that your business is doing wonderful. If you are 3 million in debt, and haven't had a client in 6 months-you should tell everyone your business is doing wonderful. in business and politics, everything is always beautiful. |

You know what, they're being supportive and that's great that they are.
Tell them that it's been a lot of work, you are enjoying it and still building up your customer base.
Then, tell them who your ideal clients would be and be specific. Then, ask them if they know anyone they can refer to you. Never miss an opportunity to ask for a referral, and if your friends care, they will make the effort. |

Just tell them that business is incredible - and say it with enthusiasm! (It could be incredibly good or it could be incredibly bad at the moment, but they don't need to know the details.) Be sure to tell them that no matter how incredibly busy you are, that you're always looking for new referrals and to please keep you in mind when they're talking with friends. Give them a few extra business cards to hand out for you.
Giving them this type of enthusiastic response gives them confidence in referring clients to you. |

Startup business rarely produce immediate results. So when you evaluate the success of your company, it's not a question of profit vs loss, but rather whether or not your are on the right track. If expenses are leveling out, your client base is increasing, then you're doing fine. When someone asks you how you're doing, tell them it's alot of work and coming along well, but then immediately begin talking about your plans for the future and where you envision the company being soon.
Remember: people respond to visions.
If you paint the picture of your soon to be incredibly successful company, people will get excited and pass the word along. So just keep in mind that the current status of your new company is far less important than the image you give people when you describe where the company will be in the future. |
