No matter where you work you should probably bring the fact that he is belittling and abusing his subordinates to the attention of his bosses.
If you think it is genuinely good hearted (just mis-played inappropriate humor) let him know that it bothers you. When I managed a small crew, I had someone tell me that I regularly hurt their feelings. It shattered me. This was someone that did a great job and had my complete respect. I thought I was kidding around WITH them. I had to re-evaluate my whole presentation. I think we all ended up better for it.
So take a step back and try to let the right person know, but talk to someone! Even if you end up quiting, inaction will only damage your self-esteem and hurt your performance.
edit: I didn't see your last comment... get him fired, he should not be in a managerial position. |

Sure if your made to feel that way all the time and by that particular person. I would first try to address it with his/her supervisor. If that didn't work I'd go to the labor board.
Good luck. |

You could as you have every legal right to do so - however, it could add fuel to fire..............
A good mate of mine is head of HR within the NHS, and has recalled many tales of dealing with bullying managers
Try this approach.............
Next time your manager calls you a name, or any comment deemed unethical/rude, turn around and say,
'Excuse me, but can you repeat exactly what you just said to me please' ( in the same manner in which you would ask somebody if they would like a cup of tea - in a polite and friendly voice)
Most of the time, they will be really surprised by this request and will try to reword what they have just said politely. You have just made them aware of what they are saying and subtly, said to to them, I'm standing up to you.
If the aggression does not stop, calmly turn around and say that you are never to speak to me as such, otherwise that you regret that it will put in writing and walk away for them to ponder |

Yes you would. And you would win. It is against the law for your boss to provide a hostile environment for you to work in. Calling you names and putting you down is considered a hostile environment. Don't let him or her do this to you anymore.....go to an attorney. |

I would file a complaint. Nobody has the right to do treat you that way, especially in front of other employees. He needs the crap kicked out of him. |

If your company has a protocol in place for filing such grievances, then I would talk to the people who do that about it. No doubt your boss has a boss, too. No one should be treated that way. |

Yes, you should file a report or leave. Maybe both, because filling a report against someone just causes them to resent you for it forever. Whatever you do, don't stand for it or I promise you it will get worse. See if you can transfer to another location or department. Good Luck |

You could look for another job, wait until you've secured it and managed to get a good reference from your twat of a boss (I assume you're a good worker), then tell him to shove his job up his jacksy |

Certainly a need to have a word with them in private to ascertain the cause of their treatment towards you and if you cannot get a reasonable answer take the matter their line manager.
As a last resort you can consult ACAS with regard to constructive dismissal. |

I understand the process of going to HR bu what if the abusive boss is the owner of the company. Filing a complaint is out of the question. How should i handle that? would i have any legal standing, if he has fits of rage and likes to verbally belittle me in fromt of other employees and guests. he also has shown physical agression in the office in the form of punching a hole through a door. Please help im not sure what to do anymore. I need the money from this job but i need my health as well. |
