Hi,
I recommend that you begin by building a highly diverse portfolio. This will broaden your areas of expertise, and allow you to work with clients in all areas. Since you seem like a novice, you should begin with something simple like taking head shots for up-n-coming models/actors. Try http://www.craigslist.org and choose the area where you live. Go to the 'talent' & 'creative' sections. Don't charge much; this will bring in more clients. Plus, you are new to the game.
You can even network with other photographers and make-up artists, and do an apprentinceship sort of thing.
Also, if you are interested in being a party photographer, you should consider contacting local nightclubs, and become a party promoter. Create a contract with them, where you are 'allowed' to take pictures of the partygoers (for free, or charge something small like $1 a photo), and post on your website (or theirs). Use Photoshop to do a watermark of your name and website like this http://www.lasvegaspics.com/.
For something more classic, post an ad and specify that you are a budding photographer, and are willing to photograph them/their event for a small fee, as long as they are willing to allow the use of their pictures in your portfolio.
Good Luck!! And get a website (if you don't have one already).
Also, check out this website to get in touch with other photographers, http://photographers.com/.

People have given you some really good answers here. I am a somewhat recognized photographer. There is some of my work in Museums and some in private collections.
However, I have not made alot of money at it. You need to focus more on commercial photography instead of art to make money. I am not sure of your interests, but I wish you the best of luck!!! |

First of all, start out taking classes and learning all you can enhancing your skills in the process. Build a portfolio of your work and submit it to various agencies. In the mean time perfect yourself, and get involved with jobs such as wedding photographer or art work photograpy. Photography is such a broad field. What kind of photgraphy are you talking about? Then people can give you better information perhaps. |

I am assuming that you know the basics of photography, so the best way to make a name for yourself is to start getting your stuff out there. Send in submissions, and the more your photos get published or wins prizes, the bigger your résume becomes. Once you have a portfolio and some publications, you should really try and find an internship. Its a great way to learn more about the photgraphy industry and it is a great way for you to make connections. If you can get a job doing any kind of free lance, or etc. you can build a base from there. The more you get your name out there, the more likely you will get some kind of recognition. Hope this helps... good luck. |

First, of course, take the courses necessary in high school and college. Get as much "journeyman/apprentice" experience under your belt as possible by allowing a professional ( if you know someone) take you under his/her wing. Build a portfolio and apply with newspapers (well-known or mini). Although the photo chief assigns the assignments, keep your ears open and try to get every extra assignment that your personal and job world can handle. Never stop practicing ---there's never anyone so good that there's not someone out there who wants the same desires you do. Believe in yourself and in what you want and you will succeed. . |

Study, read, practice & then know your craft. Then interview 20-30 famous photograhers that you admire. Offer to become an assistant to one of them. Once you become an assistant to a famous photographer, you can learn from a great mentor.
Curiosity, being creative, being yourself & having your own style, associating with other photographers & always striving to learn will help. Publicity & being at the right place at the right time at the right angle helps too.
Good luck! |

best thing to do is get yourself know. an easy way of doing that is volunteering to take pictures for free for different groups (weddings, babtisms, parties etc..) word of mouth will spread quickly if the people were satisfied, next thing you know people will be the ones calling you and this time they WILL pay you. Good luck, hang in ther as the beginnings always the hardest |

Mention to Family and Friends that you can do Photography during their special events. You will meet people at these events. Remember to make business cards to pass around to others. I am guessing that you have a major photography background. |

I am in the same boat. I am going to school for photography myself and I would say, take some kick a s s pictures. Make sure your lighting is on point and you take pictures of what people like to see and that includes using photshop. And put yourself out there. Find someone who is in the field that will take you under their wing and show you new stuff. Like they say, it's not always what you know, but who you know. |

You might (just to start) try taking pictures of people's pets for very small fee, people loves there animals. If your pictures are good word of mouth is your best asset... |

try to photograph what you find most interesting for yourself, and become really good at it. basically, like this you can find your specific area, which will help you stand out among thousands of others. make sure that you get professional training, just don't let it limit your fantasy. |

Non-profit organizations sometimes need help. You never know who you might meet through them. Also, some small local newspapers; weeklies or real estate publications would also be a good start. Most of the above answers are great and should give you a good start. Good Luck! |

Advertise advertise advertise! It's a slow process but it can be done. My daughter has done this; it took her quite some time. She did a ton of advertising, placed circulars in businesses and now has a web site. Her high school photography teacher is really proud of her now. |

most photogs specialize in a specifig area, choose yours wether sports, portrait ,landscape ,advertising or whatever you enjoy and learn all you can about it ,you will need to spend some large dollars on camera bodies and lenses and other asserories. a formal education in photography will go a long wat in getting that first paying job, from there develop a killer portfolio and you are on your way,but be advised that it can take years and years of work before you can have the name recognition to fly solo. |
