Low volume premium tequila. There are some mighty fine small distillers in Mexico. Much of the best stuff is sold only locally.
Remember Knob Creek and Maker's Mark? That stuff sells like hot cakes (and it's from the major whiskey manufacturers).

I live in San Diego. My dentist is in Tijuana. I usually walk across the border, and continue walking to downtown. I pass a lot of this stuff on the way.

vanilla extract is extemely cheap in Mexico and expensive here. If you can get it real cheap there then sell it for a reasonable price here ( not more then what we already pay) you could make some good money. They sell it by the quart.

You were halfway there already when you said "hot items" - how about HOT sauces - arguably the best in world.
No messing around with alcohol licences needed, relatively compact for transport, not easy to get authentic alternatives unless you DO know someone who will export them for you.
