There are so many options out there for work-at-home businesses. Part of it depends on how much time you want to put into it. Are you looking for something full-time or just some extra part-time cash?

Just looking at online opportunities, there's everything from joining paid survey sites to writing for websites to affiliate marketing to microstock photography, and on and on.

People have also been running mail-order (or web-order) sales businesses from home for years, so this is another popular avenue. Other people work for a company from home, doing transcription (one friend of mine transcribes verbal accident reports for an insurance company) or data entry.

You should look at some websites or books that have collections of ideas and see what might fit you best. They all have different time requirements and levels of income you can possibly make.
As with anything else, the time you put into it will probably reflect how much you can earn.

I run a website dealing with creative moneymaking ideas (Sweetgigs.com) but there are lots of other places to get information out there, too, so I'd recommend you do as much research as you can before committing to one particular idea.

I tried over 15 opportunities in the course of 2 years so I have some great information for you plus a list of top 10 work at home scams!

I am a mother of two little girls who are actually tugging on my arm as I write this so I will try to be brief. Many people are looking for work from home companies. All the scams definitely create a big problem but also, there is a problem of people misunderstanding the difference between work from home "jobs" and work from home opportunities. There really are not work from home “jobs”. To get that you have to start working for a company in their offices first, then they MAY allow you to take the job home.

Most of the work from home opportunities that are legitimate offers are not an hourly pay type job. They are business opportunities that help you in starting your own business from your home. What you should do first is to decide if you are simply looking for an hourly rate type job or if you are looking for more of an opportunity for additional income such as what you would make in your own business being your own boss from home. Small home businesses have some small costs involved, less than $500 to start is reasonable and I would stay away from those wanting $1000-$5000. It doesn’t cost that much to start and run a home business so you shouldn’t pay it.

If you are coming across places that say free then I would RUN don’t walk the other way! They never are. I tried them many a times and 3 weeks later I had to buy this and 6 weeks later that. After 6 months these “free businesses” had cost me over $800 on average.

After trying 15 things I now work about 18-25 hours per week for a National Medical Healthcare Company. This is a nationally known and reputable home business which is what you need to make sure you are looking for. I have been with the company almost a year and a half now and I make over $4500 a month! In your first month, depending on how many hours you can work, I have seen people make anywhere from $500 to over $2500. And your income will increase each month because you get paid residual income as well.

The best part is they have 401(k), direct deposit, life insurance and a benefits package most of which you get from day one. In addition, there are no products, no hard selling or pushing, no cold calling, no home parties and no telemarketing! That was VERY important to me. Please beware of these scams. There are some legit home businesses out there so be careful. Look for companies in business over 10 years. Look for companies with a needed product or service, something you would be proud to represent. Look for companies that have a national reputation and are members of the US Chamber of Commerce.

As for those of you who say…..”I want to work from home but I don’t want to have to pay for anything”. Well, that’s great! But it will never happen. Let’s be honest, there is no such thing as a free lunch. If it is a true honest home business you need to expect to pay. Mr. Walt Disney didn’t start the Disney empire “without paying for anything”. Neither did Mr. Sam Walton, owner of Wal-Mart.

My name is Bill and about 7 years ago I found myself what I like to call Involuntarily Unemployed. I was introduced to a company called Pre Paid Legal Services Inc. This company was as solid as any company I had ever seen or worked for. They offer what I believe to be the best home business we will ever see. They have a common sense product that people need, it's priced right and there is no competition. In about a year I was able to replace my full time income and my wifes full time income and today have retired us both from corporate America to work from home. Find a company with a product you can be excited about, make sure the company is strong and well established and then make a decision to go for it. It can happen for you with the right coaching. There are a few legitimate data entry companies but are not hiring and have large waiting lists (1-2yrs). The majority of data entry jobs you seen online are scams. A real company will want you to have skills inc fast typing, may want you to know MS Excel, and will usually ask that you have high speed internet. Once in a long while you may found one online on a job website but thats rare.

If you do an advanced search on yahoo, you will find previous answers, sometimes the info on these is good as the info they gave is likely to have been verified if the answer was voted as 'Best'.

I have been working from home in India for the past few months. My income comes mainly from Data Entry, Online Surveys and Transcription. The majority of the Data Entry and transcription comes from english speaking countries like the UK and USA.

The first thing you need to do when you’re looking for a work at home opportunity is decide whether you want a JOB or a home business. These are two completely different things. For instance, if you don’t like working with people, you wouldn’t want to do any customer contact type of work. Whether you want a job or a home business, you should thoroughly check out the company. If it’s a home business, you should know exactly what you are getting for your initial investment. You also need to know what is involved, i.e., how you make money, what equipment, if any, is needed, etc. That’s where I started when I was looking 4 years ago. I thought I wanted a job, but soon found that a home business was the better choice since I needed flexibility with 3 kids and one on the way. The one I found is listed with the BBB and cost less than $50 to start—I wanted to make money NOT give it to someone else. I also didn’t want to be pestered daily by someone trying to make a buck from my hard work.
