nutty2rhyme | Where could I buy a money order? |

Most convenience stores and grocery stores sell them. Also you can get one at the post office; they're very inexpensive and don't cost any more to send than mailing a check. DO you mean Western Union or other wire transfers? Those cost more, but a money order will probably cost less than a dollar. |

Walmart I think is the Cheapest ( under a dollar )
A check cashing place will sell them , Post offices and Banks charge an arm and a leg! |

Wal-Mart in WA costs 46 cents each. Not sure about CA. Or the local post office, I think 89 cents, Safeway, 89 cents - maybe a dollar. The banks-for a few dollars. Hope this helps. |

Cheapest, safest place is the Post Office. Sending it is the same as mailing anything. The cost of mailing depends on how fast you want it to get there (overnight, 2nd day, etc). First class mail takes at most about 4 days for US addresses. More (1-2 weeks) for international addresses.
Cost for money orders up to $500 is 95 cents. $500.01 to $1000 is $1.30.
First Class postage is 39 cents. Express mail next day is $14.40 |

You can get them at most convenience stores, but I have two favorite places. Any Mailboxes, etc ( or UPS Store) or the US Post Office. |

Amscot is a national check cashing/money order center... they are more or less in multiple locations in each city on the GulfCoast of Florida.. perhaps they are located in LA as well... I also believe that you can purchase money orders at the post office, grocery store customer service windows (you need to have their "club card" though) and in most stores where there is a "checks cashed" sign on the building.
I think the minimum purchase is $1 and to send one, the price depends on what service you use... UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL, etc, etc..... the sooner you need it to arrive with a short amount of lead time prior to delivery will raise the cost as well as the distance. |

Most of the costs here everyone pretty much explained well, but for a suggestion, if the money order is for a small amount, you could probably go for the cheaper ones like grocery stores, or walmart. But my strong suggestion is if the money is going to be of large value, like over $200 or so, i would get a money order from the bank. Yes they cost $2 to $3, but if you mail it out somewhere, and it gets lost, you will have a much quicker response using the higher priced money order, because part of that cost is paying for better service in tracing, etc. I found out the hard way, a $0.19 money order i sent for $124.69 a month ago got lost in mail. They were going to charge me $24 just to activate a trace and even then there was no guarantee. I finally got it recovered $24 later, not to mention the $39 late fee that came up from card company because it took 4 weeks to recover my money. Had i paid the $3.00 money order, i probably would have had the money back with a week or two no extra charge.
So to sum it up... it is a chance you take and you get what you pay for |
