I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.
Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.
Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:
* The Restaurant Business Start-up Guide by Paul Daniels
* Restaurants That Work: Case Studies of the Best in the Industry by Martin E. Dorf
* Restaurant Financial Basics by Raymond S. Schmidgall
* Opening a Restaurant or Other Food Business Starter Kit: How to Prepare a Restaurant Business Plan and Feasibility Study by Sharon Fullen
* Upstart Guide Owning & Managing a Restaurant by Roy S. Alonzo
* The Restaurant Managers Handbook: How to Set Up, Operate, and Manage a Financially Successful Food Service Operation by Douglas Robert Brown
There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.
Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures! |

Not to be too negative, but the majority of restaurants fail in their first year of operation. To make a go of it, you need to work in restaurant management for a couple of years at least, gain experience, learn the tricks of the trade and the secrets of success, and then try to do it.
It is a capital-intensive business, so unless you have lots of cash available to risk, you will need investors. |

I suggest taking a few Culinary art classes. They offer courses in Restaurant management and other buisness areas |

Sites won't help. Talk to owners of successful businesses, Resturants, et al) and they know what it takes. The rest is theory and a waste. |

Doing the Right Thing

I really hope that your restaurant will be successful, but you need to put up lots of capital to start it.
1) You need to look for a place to have your restaurant.
2) Then you need a loan from the bank
3) Then you need to fix up the place
4) Start posting jobs
5) When you get your workers, you need to invite your family and your workers should invite their families too on grand opening day.
6) Then you need to start advertising.
7) Maybe get someone from a local newspaper company to review your restaurant.
8) You may need an accountant and someone to do inventory too. |
|

Just a friend.
|
You need to come up with a business plan first. Just because you love to cook is not enough. Restaurants have one of the highest failure rates of any business. You need to come up with the financial backing to get it started and most important ...the location. Something original yet mainstream would be best, but that is of course up to you.
Remember this is a business first. |

Idont know where in the world you live, but if you live in the UK, a good way to start cheaply is to take on a tenancy of a pub. But be aware, some pub landlords charge too much, but to get an idea, read www.thepublican.com or www.morningadvertiser.co.uk, and get a feel of the industry. If you live in the UK, and want more advice, feel free to E-mail me. |

I would start by working for someone who owns a restaurant. It is easier ( less painful) to learn from other people's mistakes. |
