Which is the best UK bank to open a business account with?
Do you have any personal recommendations? And what's so good about them?

Or which is the best out of HSBC, Lloyds TSB and Natwest?

I'll be doing a lot of internet selling if that affects things!

Depends very much what your requirements are.

They're all very similar but have different introductory offers, have slightly different charge structures for different services on different account and are stronger/weaker in certain areas.

Draw up a shortlist of what need from your account. Consider things such as if you need a traditional counter service or could make do with an online tariff at reduced cost, if you're likely to have money in the bank and want it to attract interest, if you need to borrow, if you need to transfer money internationally, how many cheques you're likely to write, how much cash you're likely to want to pay in over the counter etc. Unlike a personal account many of these things will be chargeable so having a rough idea of your banking profile will help assess which bank is offering you the best deal.

Most banks offer free banking for start-up businesses for at least six months, sometimes longer. HSBC are currently offering 18 months for accounts opened before the end of February. LloydsTSB were also offering 18months when I last enquired.

Co-op bank offer free banking for all members of the Federation of Small Businesses. While FSB subscriptions are more than you'd be likely to pay in bank charges membership has other benefits so you might want to consider if it's worth joining before deciding who to bank with, or move to the Co-op if you ever become an FSB member.

Bad experience with Nat West. Awful communication. I had a business account with Barclays but they kept changing my business manager, not helpful.

I'm with Abbey now. They have been ok so far....

Peardrop Explodes
definitely not Barclays

I was using Lloyds but got fed up with the charges and when Abbey offered free business banking, I jumped ship. I dont know if you can still sign up for that but banking now costs me nothing (mostly its done online). I now have an overdraft facility with Abbey but they don't do business loans. So I went back to lloyds to borrow £10,000 (I have had a lloyds personal account for 20+ years) Anyway, what i felt was that all they wanted to do was sell me stuff: unnecessary loan protection insurance (effectively doubles the cost of the borrowing) my business manager was about 26 and didnt have the first clue about what its like to run a small business -not the faintest foggiest iota of a clue and this annoyed me because there I was, cap-in-hand, with a tie on for goodness sake, lol. I realised that they were as good as useless for me as a small business owner: their advice would not be worth anything and it would just cost money. (In the end I borrowed from my family reluctantly at half the rate of interest lloyds would have charged and a quarter of what it would have cost if i had paid for the insurance that the silly 26 yr old was trying to hard-sell me "how can you sleep at night" etc). The basic truth is banks will not risk money: they lend when the risk is minimal and they could not care less about you. Treat them like any business and dont trust them just because you have a long history with them. Sorry for the rant!! Co-op bank is at least ethical. Abbey is ok.

They are all as bad as each other in the end. All I can say is Ive had a bad time with natwest over the years but tsb have been ok. Just take your time and shop around for the best deal.
