carlos | Who makes more money a carpenter or mechanic? |
trying to decide which one is better so i can follow a career |

In sort... about the same. Long term... the carpenter has a greater potential to earn a greater level of income and enjoy and greater overall lifestyle.
Of course there are always exceptions to the rule. But in general I feel that this is the case. Since you are looking for a career, you are obviously not just planning to work at the bottom and stay there. You are probably looking to move up to management and then to ownership over time. When you compare carpentry with a mechanical service of some sorts, the carpentry tends to have the greater potential.
Why? To start your own mechanic business would cost hundreds of thousands if not more. So a mechanic will tend to ALWAYS been an hourly wage earner trading their time for money. In the end, it's a skill but you do not get better and better at it and make more and more money. The mechanical jobs tend to have a fixed rate. Meaning to change a whatever pays X dollars. Regardless of your level of skill, the pay is the same. That is not true for a carpenter.
The carpenter can start his own business very inexpensively doing small jobs and growing his business over the years. As his skills become greater, he can demand a greater price. Good skilled carpenters are hard to find. Mechanics are very plentiful.
So all in all, the potential is much less for a mechanic. In fact, most of the people I know that are mechanics work for someone else. Most of the cparenters I know work for theirself.
Hope this helps.... |

Without specializing (not a cabinet maker or aircraft mechanic) I would say a carpenter has the potential to make more in the long run. Both will charge roughly the same amount per hour, and both will work on a quote/estimated time basis. If working for someone else, both will bring home about the same money. The difference will be in going off on your own, starting your own company, and getting your own contracts. Once that happens, a carpenter will have much less overhead. Material costs is passed to the customer in both jobs, but the tools required for a carpenter (power saw, hammer, nail gun, etc) are a lot less in number and considerably less expensive than everything a mechanic needs (air guns, many wrenches, specialty tools, electronic diagnostic machines, etc for many vehicle types). A carpenter's tools will also remain consistent. He'll replace broken or worn out equipment, but won't have to be constantly upgrading to keep up with the changing auto market. An independent mechanic would also have to build and maintain an auto shop or place to work out of the weather, as well as pay utilities, insurance, etc. all costing a lot more in the long run. |

How good is the carpenter? How good is the mechanic?
Average... about equal pay.
Top pay level for the carpenter is not as high as top pay level for the mechanic.... but getting the job at a Rolls Royce dealership is a bit hard. |

generally speaking a mechanic. |

I'd say a good carpenter can make more -- but not just your general nail pounder guy. Specialize in something (cabinets, etc.) and you could be making good money eventually.
Plus, in construction, there's always the potential to start your own crew, company, contractor... lots of potential in construction. |

I'd go with being a mechanic. A good mechanic can charge anywhere from $25 to $50 an hour if he wanted to. Dealerships will pay out the wazoo to have a good mechanic on their team (especially Benz, BMW, exotic cars). A good carpenter is easy to find, but a good mechanic is a diamond in the rough. Plus, look at it this way, they'll always be a need to repair automobiles. |

Depends on the specifics
An aircraft mechanic will earn more than most carpenters BUT a craft carpenter doing fine quality work will earn more than a local "quick fix" mechanic.
Pick which you are best at. |

a mechanic. i wil explain it briefly
ok at the begining lets take it as they both earn £100/permonth
but every single month mechanic is learning and afterwards he could be in a high position in mechanism, but carpenter wil stil be doing his old job after about an year, so i suspect that mechanism is better earning job than carpenting |

Carpenter, here is why:
Everyone is building like there is no tomorrow right now and well into the future. There will always be work for a carpenter. While a mechanic on “Pimp my Ride” or at a Bentley dealership is paid well, getting to that level is hard and takes a lot of time. In short, as a mechanic you will be changing oil for crap pay for the next 3 years before you get a chance to move up. With modern cars, there is less and less need of repairs and once a car gets to the age where it will need serious work done, you can’t charge too much or the customer will just junk it and buy a new 1. |
