My wife and I work full time, I teach martial arts part time and my wife has a online business selling bridal wear and prom dresses. After four years, she has tired of this and no longer wishes to do it. For my part I really enjoy selling dresses and would like to contine with it. But she makes them, I can't do the business without her. I also feel why dump a project that has been good to us? Sometimes it is hard to keep it going when you have a full time job as well. Is there any way I could keep it going, because selling brides dresses is a lot of fun.

Yeah - all good answers so far. What I do is answer all enquiries, set up appointments, buy the materials and do all the accounting, be available 24/7. It's hard work for both of us but she has the harder deal, I admit that. As one of you said if she wants out not sure how I can take it forward. But I do put a lot of money on the table and it should help, when things get tough - and they are, I think we should still continue. |

she makes them? that must be a lot of time and patience, do you help her buy the products (go to the shops) make her drink and food whilst she is doing it? you saying its fun selling dresses, but i cant imagine making something can be fun over and over again, that must be hard work, look at who does the most work, and decide from there, maybe negotiate something, mak sure you are both helping eachother, or even get someone to help, you pay them but your still makin money, like a friend or family? or advertise? |

if its a money problem, then ask if you guys could stick through it for a few more weeks, and if things change, then you can decide then. or itf she just doesn't have the inspiration, try to mix things up a little more. try a new type of dress or maybe limit your bridal dresses, but increase your prom dresses. whatever floats your boat. but if she still doesn't want, you should go along with her wishes. |

You've got to present her with the numbers, basically, how profitable has this business been in relationship to the amount of time you're both putting in.
If it has been profitable (and, I assume it has), subtract the average amount of income you'll see per month. Does the remainder allow you to live comfortably or would you miss the income?
I know if it were my wife, the only argument I could present would be in dollars & cents. |

That's a tough situation. I have owned a small business for 12 years and we have experienced this same problem. You have to be very careful if you are going to replace her with another person. It can cause resentment, understand you guys are a team. Even worse she is your wife, so make sure she is comfortable with her replacement. Letting her choose may be best. Also, you may consider doing just sales without alterations. I am not familiar with your industry but it might be an option. If you think you can get her interested again I do have some tips. First, give her some time off. Getting her out of that element may give her time to miss it. Second, give your workspace a face lift. Pay attention to the color choice. Blue is relaxing while green is more inspiring. Third, find some old receipts or pictures to look back on things when she was interested. It helps to put things into perspective. Also, make sure there is good lighting and she is comfortable where she works. Things like the height of her machine, type of chair, etc. really needs to be tailored around her. It is not a one size fits all. Good luck buddy. |
