If you want to get rich, write a book on how to get rich, or sell some DVD’s on the subject. That’s $49.99 for three easy payments, and operators are now standing by. I’m being facetious of course, but beware of scams that make promises that sound too good to be true. It’s old and simple wisdom, but it never goes out of style. Startup cost should be stated upfront, crystal clear, and make sense. For example training and licensing fees, equipment cost, required insurance, and supplies. It should never be hidden behind phrases like “I discuss all this in detail in my free seminar, and it will come with the packet you order. So in the meantime just look at all the proven testimonials.” They show you people with expensive cars, boats, and houses, sort of reminiscent of people who lost weight on a diet fade, but they really had a personal trainer to help out too. The fact is some people have more affluent spheres of influence then others, to enable their startup success in a given marketing scheme.
If you’re looking for a business, the first question should always be, “what’s in it for them,” followed by the next question of, “Can this business honestly work well for me?” In other words, know the business of the business, and how are they really profiting from this and from you. So, if you really don’t know the business, and the answers to those basic questions, run my friend, run and tell the others. Money never falls out of the sky unless you win the lottery. The only way to get it is to honestly go after it. Anything less then this ethic is mere hype and gimmicks.
This does not mean you can’t work on your own, and do well because many people do and you could too. But be practical and avoid promises of great fortune, those who sell you on fortune are probably hiding something. But watch them back peddle when they are pushed with the hard questions, because often the promises of fortune are subtle and implied, not guaranteed.
Also, not everyone has the right aptitude for self-employment, and there are basically two kinds of self employed people. Those who work for themselves only to truly avoid working for a living, and the genuine ones who are the “go getters,” because you have to be a “go getter” since you’re not supervised.
But working for your self, is nonetheless real work. And you’ll put in longer and more irregular hours then on any 9 to 5 job you’ve ever had in the past. I’ve set home with a sick wife, only to hit the deck running when opportunity knocked. Because there’s no union to say, “It’s not my department,” because it’s all your department, and you never really clock out. Everybody’s a potential customer and the client is your boss. Plus, you’re always hitting the books, articles, or looking for new ways to promote your business, even if that means hiking on foot to pass out 100’s of flyers a week, because stamps are not in your budget.
It might help to take some courses, and learn about the wealth of free information out there, that does not cost you an arm and a leg, and prey on your financial dreams and insecurities. A Junior College or Adult Study Program could be a good start. There are also some great books in the Dummies Series I’m sure that can help. Finding a mentor is another example. In the book “Rich Dad poor Dad,” one of the things that were pointed out is to simply ask people. So, if someone is successful, ask them how they did it. But be sure to ask someone who has credibility with you. Someone that has nothing in it for them and you feel certain they have walked what they talk. In other words friend, start with word of mouth first, before venturing to cyber world.
In closing, there was an advertising consultant who was paid major bucks to come to town to discuss new trends in promotions. Ironically, he pointed out that word of mouth was the “new trend,” and this word of mouth is the very catalyst for launching your online presence. In other words, use your website as a means of further explaining what you told them in person. It seems the more fancy we get; the more we get back to the basics. Holy Cow, my Grandmother could have told them that.
My personal mentor also once told me “put ethics first and the rest will fall into place.” Because you get out of it, what you put in to it. But without real action though, these are only words.
