There are so many work from home businesses out there, most of them have a start-up fee is pretty much the same accross the board around $500 and some might have an additional monthly fee. My wife recently started a home business selling Health supplements, before she did any business with this company, I did lots of research about them and their products, and the feedback was pretty good. Of course she gave me info about 10 different companies and only 2 where worth a shot.
What I have learned a lot during the process of researching these companies for my wife:
1- The products: what you sell has to be good, most of home businesses revolve around Network marketing and as a result most people want to see instant gratification, so the product has to be good period.
2- The Fees $$: $500.00 plus an average of $29.00 per month is not too bad for being your own boss, most franchises are at least $100k to start or any other business that you might persue might cost a little less or more.
Now whatever field or product you decide to do, just remember it will take time and work to build it, and also keep in mind that you might burn some bridges between friends and family, as some of your first clients are usually people around you, I forgot to mention to make sure that their costumer service department is good and fast.

Unfortunately most of what you are getting are not JOBs but business opps. There are legit jobs out there but most don't have to advertise because they get overwhelmed with referrals from their own 'virtual employees'.
A JOB is not going to make you rich, but it will bring in income. Most require that you have a guaranteed 'noise free' work place, and of course the skills they are seeking.

There are some jobs out there that allow you to work at home, but most people work as Independent Business Owners or Independent Contractors from home. In other words you work for yourself and you are responsible for paying taxes on your income etc...
There are so many websites out there to search on, and be very careful because all are not free sites. I personally found this out the hard way! The best way that I have found to be free during the day to take care of kids, is a company called Pure Romance. We are an in home party plan that caters to women. I get to make a full time income on just 6 hours a week (3 hours away from home, 1 night per week), but you can work more or less depending on your needs.

You could setup a blog or website, this is completely free. Once you have added some good content, you can start to earn money from advertising. I know you wont make a huge income from this, but it would get you started. Pick a topic which you are very interested in, and write a piece on that everyday.
I've given step by step instructions on how to create a website for free, and then add adverts to it so you can start generating income.
