Would you buy anything from my online shop if I opened it? [details inside]?
I was thinking of opening an online shop, i don't have a name yet, depends whats taken i guess, anyway, the idea was that I'd go around shops and buy the stuff they have on sale, for example if I saw a really cheap MP3 player, I could buy loads of them. Then I'd put them on my shop, add 50p-2 pound onto the price and sell it there. It would still be a good price, and I'd be able to make a profit and keep the site running, what do you think?
Additional Details
[I told a friend of mine the idea, and he said that people would just go to the shops themselves, but the idea is that they won't be selling them at that price for ever, I'm offering them convenience, and they might not be able to get to those same shops]
I thought that was relevant

Your idea is sound, it's when you buy you make the money so providing you buy stuff cheap enough you should do well. But you might do better to buy the stuff wholesale.

The advantages of an online shop is there aren't the running costs of a standard one. Lots of people do make money with online stores, just look at ebay. Marketing is the biggest expense you will have. People can't buy off you if they don't know you are there.

I personally rarely buy things online, but then I don't buy things much anyway, I hate spending money. But I think it's the way ahead for retail.

if your going to that i think you would be better of selling on eBay as you will get more passing trade.
Good luck with it which ever way you decide to do it

Once you add your costing and the price of postage and packaging it wont be such a bargain anymore.

Plus you have the costing of designing your web page and setting up credit facilities.

It wont work, technology will always get better and cheaper. If you are serious about this you need to buy in bulk from the manufacturer or distributor.

My husband and I have an online/offline retail business that might work better for you. I can't give you details here since it's against the rules of this site but send me an email or check out my profile if you'd like more information.

I would, the only reason I don't buy more stuff online is because the shipping and handling is quite expensive.

This is a bit of a non-starter I feel. The p+p will blow you out of the market and you won't be able to compete with the big boys for long even if you do find the odd bargain in the shops.Good luck if you do decide to go for it.

I opened my first e-commerce site in the mid-90s, right after Yahoo! Stores opened. In fact, there were only 'mom & pop' stores...no Victoria's Secrets, Macys, etc. Anyway, I just closed my last (5th store) this past week. Yahoo! Stores is a good place to open. They are seasoned and helpful every step of the way for a novice. Also, there are many books to help you along too.

What you need to consider in addition is merchant related issues: like you'll need a business account(s), a way to process online orders, etc. There are transaction fees which are added by the bank (1.5-2.0%) AND Yahoo! take a percentage too. So you'll have to add that in too. Don't forget shipping costs. either.

It is very typical to mark up 100%. So let's say you purchase an MP3 player at $50, you'd charge $100 and then some, becuase you have to include those 'hidden' costs I mentioned earlier.

Check with the bank about it's fees, check out the site that would host your store (Yahoo!??? or whatever) and make sure you will at least breakeven AND make a profit.

The e-commerce site is very competitive and someone will always seem to be selling the same thing for less becuase they do high-volume.

Nonetheless, I highly recommend you check everything out and jump in and have some fun while you make some money!!! Best of luck & success!!!!
