You called in a half hour before your 3 pm shift and stated you couldnt find a sitter and would try to be in , and will call back. You didnt call back, your boss calls you at 5 pm and asks "Did you know you had to be at work all day today?"So you rant to your fellow employees that you QUIT because your boss was rude to you, but cannot say it directly to your boss? Do you think you should be taken off the scheduele, or should that no good whining boss who had to close the doors to the business you didnt show up for APOLOGISE?

Unless you have a very special, patient boss, you can't be doing these things and expect to be treated well. You should have called back. How often do you do this? Most employers won't call you unless it has already been a problem with you calling in sick, etc. You are lucky they didn't fire you. They have no reason to apologize. You were the one who went ranting off telling everyone about it and told people you QUIT. You now have ruined your own work record and will find it difficult to find another job. What are you going to do for your child now? You should have kept it to yourself. |

And you are how old? Why did you wait so long to call? Surely you knew earlier in the day that you needed a sitter! Why did you not call back? That's one no show, two more and you're out the door (if he's feeling generous.) Did he really take you off the schedule? Well, that's what you get for telling people you quit, you silly goose. Why should he apologize? If he had to close the doors because you were not there to DO YOUR JOB, then you cost him money. Suppose he decides to take you to small claims court and sue you for it, then whatcha gonna do, babe? |

I think if you didn't call back and didn't show up to work, you're the one that's rude and unprofessional. Childcare problems aren't your employer's issue. Your boss doesn't need to apologize, you do. Also, since you're out of a job and now have jeopardized your child's well-being, you should be very careful about your attitude if you find another job. |

As i understand it, there is no reason for the boss to apologise. but if nothing was said directly to the boss i don't think that you should be taken off the schedule either.
sorry but i don't think that calling in a half hour before a shift to say that there is no sitter is a valid reason!
you should have arranged this when the schedule came out the week before, and if you still knew 2 days before perhaps you could of got someone else to work for you

As other people mentioned -- the employee sounds like they are in the wrong (called too late, didn't call back as they advised, didn't show up etc)
But I am posting to state my utter admiration for voicing your concern and for taking responsibility for your own perceived behavioural shortcomings. I only wish everyone was as strong a human being & manager as you are. I admire your strength --- KUDOS. Thank you on behalf of your fellow human beings and (potential) employees. |
